View Full Version : Attaching Instances, is it possible?

Hi there.

I am working on modeling some tire threads and have a question. I am modelling the tire as a plane and then using the bend modifier to make the tire round, after arraying the tire.

I would like to be able to attach an array of instances of my tire, but have each objext remain as a instance so I only have to modify the original tread pattern. As far as I can tell this is not possible. Is there a way to do this? As far as I can tell to use the attach in polymodelling each object has to be unique.

Thxs for any help. If it is in the manual some where, just let me know what to look up, because I havent found it.:)

Edit. Forgot to mention, I am using Max R6.

If I'm understanding you correctly what you can do is use multiple Symmetry modifiers, make one quarter of the tyre, add a Symmetry, say along the X-Axis, and another on the Y-Axis... but this is the important part, DONT COLLAPSE THE STACK.

The method I am trying to use is similiar to this Tutorial . (http://http://www.3dtotal.com/team/tutorials/fiat500/fiat500_w1.asp)

What I want to be able to do is have a instance of the tire tread that I modify and a tire that is ready to go (arrayed, attached and bend modifier attached) but changes when I modify the original instance.. Would your method do that Wahooney? I will give it a try tomorrow after work.

Something I just realised is that by the nature of the symmetry modifier is that it mirrors your geometry, it will disrupt the pattern on your tyre... sorry, won't work.

There is a plugin somewhere, however, that acts as an Array modifier.

Anyone able to help me out? Or am I wanting to do the impossible?

Thanks

No, you can't attach instances. If you could, you'd get an infinite loop going (think about it).

This isn't exactly helpful, but is it actually necessary to do what you're trying to do? Can't you just decide on a final tread pattern and make it?

I have decided on a tread pattern and have modeled it on a plane. Now I need to start doing the extruding to give the tread depth and making the sidewall. I thought having a finished tire that I could use to preview my changes would be helpful.

I have used the bend modifier on an array of the tread pattern right now (each object is a separate instance). This method isn’t perfect and any time I go into sub-object mode on my base instance my preview tire goes all funny, but it looks like the best I can do.

Thanks
