Don't waste your time and money on a 3D program.
Go to a decent, reasonably priced art school. You will learn far more than at a 3D training mill.

I too live on the east cost. Prat is the best school from what I hear.
I am durrently going for a BA in Digital Media at Drexel Univercity in Philly. I have decided it is worthless!!! well mostly worthless. The only thing I have learned so far is that yellow paint turns green when you add black.
A degree is only good for the piece of paper that says u have a degree... any reputable effects house will care much more for a portfolio then a degree.
I have asked this question to many people across the industry and to asnwer is always focus on your art skills a build a portfolio. Degree means nothing.
A degree might provide u with a means of getting a first job, a plce to gain experience and build that impressive resume but I sugest spending your money at barnes and nobles, not on arrogant college professor that, if they were as good as they think they are, would be working in the industry, not teaching punk ass kinds like me.
as for me, I had pressuring parents to appeas, and so I comprimised; landing at Drexel.

p.s. Hope I didn't piss to many ppl off with this one. :hmm:
p.p.s pardon my spelling

That's very true. A good art program would be the way to go. There are a number of short (few weeks) 3d programs out there, that would be better for learning specific software, but paying for a multi-year program that teaches specific software is maybe not the best course of action.

NYU is a famous Maya place. I heard good things about it. Probably most respected in NYC as far as 3d goes. Pratt is OK but not too great. I've heard Pratt is switchng to teaching mostly Maya instead of max (for degree courses).

School of Visual Arts has a very good variety of classes in at least 2 of the commonly used programs. You could take full semester classes, or continuing education classes which are like accelerated introductions to the programs. As mentioned you also have Pratt, NYU, and a host of other schools state wide, if I were in the market I would consider NYU, you could take some film classes to compliment your animation. :)

first figure out what you want to do (games, movie, effects, character animation, etc). then contact a company that deals with that type of work and ask what schools they look at when hiring right out of school.
