View Full Version : Dreadlocks or braids
dvornik 08-03-2002, 04:20 AM I'm looking for an efficient way to model dreadlocks or braids for my model here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16114). The basic idea is to shape subdiveded cylinders along splines. I don't know how to do it at all. I don't want to extrude by hand.
CSPolyTools have a tool like that and I'll use it if there's no other way - it's a bit cumbersome.

Draw a spline for the hair path
Create a circle
Use the Bevel profile modifier on the path, choose circle as shape.
For more control you could also use Lofts (under Create->compound objects->loft). Mouch more options to scale, twist & turn the shape along the path.
You could also choose to use a rectangle as shape, to create a lowpoly dreadlock. Place a meshsmooth over the object to smooth it out at rendertime.
(btw, bevel profile & loft can generate mapping coordinates automaticly)
Good luck!
