Hi

I am tying to find out how to use a drawing tablet in Maya. I have not been able to work out how to set it so that it is like a one button mouse. If any one knows I would be really greatful. Is there a script or something.

Cheers

A 1 button mouse?...you want it to be a one button mouse?...I dont get it
(oh..Mac user?)

Well this may be no help, but as far as I'm aware ALL of wacom's tablet pens acts as a 3 button mouse..you can cinfigure what pressure point represents which button, but by default the tip is left mouse, and the middle button on the pen is a 2 way that does middle-mouse and right-mouse.

Could you explain your dilema a bit more?...why do you want a 1 button mouse?

Well umm... Yeah I work at uni on a Mac, but at home I use a PC. At uni there is a file you can change in the preferences folder 'Maya.env' I think it is called. Where you can change it to a one button mouse, which means you can use the control and alt keys to determine what movements you are doing, doollying, panning etc. eg you hold ctrl and the pen acts as the rotating movement. Then hold ctrl and alt and it pans. Does that explain that.. I am good at explaining.....hmmm.

Therefore I was hoping there is the same type of thing for the PC, but the same file does not work. So I assumed there could be another one the same. That makes the mouse into a one-button type mouse. I'm not sure if there is. Or I would like to know how to use the drawing tablet properly. The problem is my tablet is pretty low quality being a poor student, and the buttons on it are usless. therefore the thing on the Macs would be an excellant solution.

Does that sort of explain it better. hhhmmmmm....

Anyway if anybody knows what I am talking about or has any solutions, about using the tablets I would be grateful for any help.

hi

I had the same problem as you.... the thing is, you don't need to change maya's preferences.

Go to the System Preferences on your mac and set your tablet to have all the 3-buttons features. Mine is set to Left click with the tip, middle-click with the top-button (pen button) and right-click with the middle button (pen button).. that's it

After this just open maya and test your new features..

sorry my bad english

Sorry guys I might not be explaining myself very well I am trying to get it to work on a PC first. I can get it to work on a MAC, by changing the maya.env file, that does work.

What I was hoping someone would know is weather you can do the same thing on a PC. I can set it up so you can use the buttons on the pen but I don;t like this setup and want to be able to use the same thing as on the macs, but on a PC!

If you want me to try and explain more I can give it a go, just tell me!

Cheers

Hey dude no worries about the intrusion, Its open for anything. I don;t mind. Anyway here is the instructions I had, to change the .env file. Just follow these.

Using 1-button mice in Maya

Edit the file Maya.env, which is in

/Users/....(name).../Library/Preferences/AliasWavefront/maya/4.5/Maya.env

This is all the file files needs to say:

MAYA_MAC_BUTTON_MAP = 1

MAYA_MAC_MENUS_ARE_OPAQUE = 0

This file must be a text file, not rtf.

The 1-button commands are:

Command = MM

Control = RM

So when dragging, hold down:

Opt = tumble

Opt-command = track

Opt-Control = zoom

Use Home key for Insert (not present on a Mac)

When the move tool is selected, you can select and move an object with command-drag, without needing to select the xyz arrow thingy.

So just read over this and do what it says. pretty simple. I would create a copy of your .env file before messing with it. But it works real well I am just cautious, which I always recommend being.
