Since my current box just got fried (can't even get a CMOS boot screen), I'm looking to put together a super workstation. I want to go with a dual xeon w/ 800 mhz FSB and a minimum of 8 GB RAM. Because I use multiple monitors (minimum 3), I was looking at using the new video cards coming out that use the PCI-E 16 slot. My problem is that I can't find one that has two PCI 16 slots. Supermicro has some that use two 16 slots, but one of them is only running 8. I've been looking everywhere on the internet, but have come up cold.

Has anyone heard of anyone putting out a MB with the above specs that have two "true" PCI-E 16 slots?

Thanks in advance

My dual Xeon board is an Intel SE7505VB2. It has a FSB of 533 but it can take up to 8Gb RAM (although as far as I know, Windows can only recognise and use a max of 4Gb). This motherboard has 2 64-bit PCI-Express, but I am not sure what you mean by "true" ones... I'm happy with this motherboard though.

Are you going to be searching deep sub-space frequencies with that box? I mean seriously, they don't even use a machine like that in any production house, or even nasa for that matter. What do you need all the power for? If this is only going to be a work station, why the overkill?

ha ha haha hahahah.

but anyway, yes that does seem a lot for a workstation, but remember, mplogue did ask for a super workstation :) i just wonder how much putting something like that together would cost... with all the other things that need be put in.

mplogue,

coincidentally i've been searching for those today on www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) (don't ask why, i'm broke) i found a few that meet your requirement, an intel, a supermicro and an asus i think were the ones with just that, plus agp 8x in case you want to use your current agp vid card till you can afford a nice pci-e one.

cheers, and good luck

The short answer is that there aren't any dual PCI-e x16 boards on the market yet.
Niether nvidia, nor Alienware have finalized their dual video card designs; which is the only use for two PCI-e x16 slots. Most mobos realeased anytime soon will have one x16 slot, and combinations of 4x and 8x slots. Remember, the highest total the motherboard technology thusfar is able to support is 32x PCI-e.

The first products on the market with dual 16x PCI-e slots will be from those two companies, in the form of nForce 4 chipset based motherboards and Alienware's own proprietary solutions, and the technology will then trickle down through the chipset/motherboard manufacturers.

Well, you know aside from graphics stuff, I need something to re-align satelites, re-sequence DNA form my cloning tanks, and overall simply to advance my plans for world domination. :D

Anyway, Supermicro seems to be the company that's leading the market on these types of MBs. For video, I was looking at the ATI FireGL V7100 which is for the PCI-E 16 - it's the only one i've seen so far that has dual DVI outputs. Do you think a second card would work OK in a PCI-E 8 that utilizes the 16 sized slot?

Also, is there a limit on Windows to 4 GB RAM?

hey, if you need a Number 2, give me a call! :D

heh ... anyways, as for pci-e cards with dvi out, i think the new nvidia line of quadros support it, check this site out: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_11761.html

and as far as a 3 monitor setup goes, perhaps this would be a cheaper alternative:

i don't know how it works exactly, I stumbled on the address as it was posted in a chat room, but check it out, maybe you'll save money. :)

btw: can i ask what you really plan to do with this super workstation? or is that classified still? (i'm willing to sign any papers :P)

Oh.. I plan on using it for my primary computer for 3ds max and video comp (combustion). I' want a 'super workstation' cause if there's one thing I hate, it's waiting!! I use a lot of dynamic plugins that can take incredible amounts of time to calculate - especially particle collision systems. Long rendering times also kill me. I WANT MORE POWER!!!! I've been a good boy and have been saving my pennies, so I figured it was time to treat myself with something special.
