I have a project that calls for a dry river bed that has a flood of water suddenly come roaring down. Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish something like this in Maya. The riverbed is live action. Thanks for any tips.

Sorry to say, that ain't gonna happen in Maya. Check out Realflow for Maya:

Might want to post this in the Maya Dynamics section too.

Nononononono! You don't want to sim something like that! You must be crazy! I never saw the cinefex for X-2, but that might be worth tracking down to see how they did the flood in that (could well have been practical though).

I'd animate a piece of geometry with some good textures for the main body of water, then use some particles on the front to get the foaming effect.

But if you are crazy (good luck rendering that many particles =p ), nextlimit has a tutorial for doing things like floods with realflow on their site:

Thanks for the tips. I am on a Mac though. Would you happen to know if there is such a program for Mac OSX? Thanks again.

I would go the Real Flow route. Depending upon the needs of the shot, you can do this with the software relativly easy.

Not that I know of... I know that Nextlimit is supposed to be developing a version of Realflow for OSX, but I have no clue when it's suppose to come out. =/
