View Full Version : Still - Cola & glass
PoPpiN 08-02-2002, 09:49 PM Hi Guys
Just thought I'd show some more of my work
Modelled and render in 3D Max with FinalRender
Hope you like it
Cheers:beer:

good job

i would like to see some condense water on the bottle and the glass, because the cola i cold and probably its roomtemperature where it stands.

yeah some lil drops would add to realism, also, i'm missing bubbles, the fluids look way too flat imo . . . add poor a glass of coke and look at what the top of the fluid looks like .. . .
hehe kitchen.hdr i presume ??

Great work.
Actually it looks like it's motion blurred (although it is not I assume:) )
Why don't you try to put some ice w/ lemon there?

very nice!
it seems that the bottle is a bit too small at the bottom part? shouldn't it be wider? maybe that's just me tho :)

I think the coke bottle does not need to be so tall. They are shorter than that. But the condensation is a great idea. Looks good so far. OH if you empty the liquid in the bottle like you have, it should not fill up the glass so much. The glass is too wide.

Nice work,
Nitpicking --> I think the glass is a bit too sharp at the
upper part where the cola-label goes.

Thanks for all the crits and nice words
The condensation thing is a wonderful idea, :applause: :applause: I'll work on it
I also might play with the falloff of the coke liquid, real coke has a little orangenish (hmmm is this actually a word) or goldish color because of the transparancies and the light scattering inside the liquid
I'll make the glass a little narrower and put some bubbles on the top of the coke
I'll get back to you guys when I have a new and hopefully better render
Take care
And yes Kitchen hdri (I would had taken a photo of my own kitchen, but I don't yet have a digi cam);)

how did u get such a nice reflection on the glass and table?
PoPpiN

I used a spherical environment (bitmat hdr)
if i delete my environment (bitmap) the picture turns into a catastrofy
When working with glass and other reflective and refractive materials you should allways have an environment
The reflection in the Glass material is just a normal relfection (finalRender, split- set reflective level at 10) I haven't setup any falloff like I probaly should
i have different materials that support each other to make it look real (outer bottle glas has one IOR value and the inner side has another IOR value

At the bottom of the bottle... it looks like two areas (one in a tringular shape) is blured for some reason? Do you see where I mean?

Yes I see what you mean
A lot of these bottles have it (in Denmark they do) I don't know what it comes from but my reference bottle had it so I thought I'd make it to;)

If it were photo, I would say "don't shot in front of the window" . Unpleasant to the eye. :D
Nice DOF. Background is modeled or it is a photo?
Cola must be a bit more transparent when such a hard light is in the background.
These two objects are too alone in the composition.
Glass looks like plastic. Glass specular should have more sharpen edges, more contrast.
Success! :)

Shouldn't there be caustics on the table surface? there don't look to be any from the glass and there should be some from the coke too, especially with the intensity of that window light

AHA! I have a suggestion that will make your cola look far more real:
Coke is actually a very dark reddish-brown. However, you can only really see that colour in certain lighting conditions.
In this kind of lighting, the coke would definitely appear that reddish-brown in places, and the best way to do that is by adding a gradient, which uses a light-incidence angle to appear, which is the reddish-brown colour.
You could also kinda trick this effect by using the gradient with angle incidence, as opposed to light-incidence, but it wouldn't really be physically accurate.
Believe me, this will make your coke look much better. I had to do some CG Coke a while back, and getting the Coke to not look like black paint was pretty tough, and this was the best way to make it look real ;)
I can't really remember how Max uses gradients - I think they are called ramps or something like that. I did mine in LW, but I'm positive that you can get the same effect.
Have a look at the image below. I made a quick Photoshop example. Look at the one on the right, and you will see what I mean about the gradient - it helps to create the cola look better, as well as giving the liquid more of a sense of depth. Even though it is very subtle, it gives it more of a touch of realism.

It would also be nice to add some condensation on the bottle, as a couple of other people have suggested :)
It looks cool so far though
These are just a couple of suggestions to make it all the more real.

Hi Leigh
Thanks for your post
It was really what i could use, i've been trying to get the light scattering through the coke right but it's a very tough job, specially when test rendering takes alot of time. I'll think you put me in the right direction.
I'm gonna use like you a said a gradient ramp with a falloff shader. I'll think it will do the job
Your photoshop skills are very impressive, that's really a great job you did, and it looks so real thanks alot
I'll post as soon I'm done with it
