View Full Version : Weird Problem with Volum Lights
CarlCampbell 08-02-2002, 08:52 PM See, I want to achieve a very typical effects, which is the one of rays of light coming from the floor curving round the objects. My problem is that when the camera looks down on the floor, you can see the circle of the light on the floor, even thought the light is underneath it. Anyone know how to fix this?
Also, does anyone know how to adjust the volume lighting so that it'll only project rays past the sides of the object? A very typical effect uses with title text, etc... when the light comes from behind and just zaps through the text marking the edges with volume light. Thanks in advance!

Make sure you've turned on shadow casting and that you're using shadow maps. Cheers!

Yeah, I have done that, but what I need is for the circle of light to not project onto any surfaces, so to say.

The circle of light is the volume light, so it's kinda logical that it is projected onto the objects.
What you can do is exlude the objects from the light regarding the illumination. (Exclude option of the light itself, choose illuminiation instead of 'both').
Maybe you should post image, so that we can clearly see the problem.

Ok, heres a snapshot of the scene. I guess you'll understand the problem now. Take into account that both of the floor plates are identical except for the textures, so I don't know what makes them different to the light.

-=bump=- aww... doesnt anyone have any ideas? This cant be a glitch... or could it?

It looks like your right plate has inverted normals. Maybe you mirrored it as an instance of the left one. It often happens that mirrored polys will not react correctly to shadows.
If that is the case, select your right plate, go to the utility panel and choose Reset Xform. Your object's normals should flip. Collapse the whole stack, go to element sub object mode, select all your faces and flip your normals again.
That should do the trick.
I hope ...
Good luck

Thanks a million! That did the trick! The only problem now is that I can't see the texture on that piece in the viewport somehow now, LOL  anyway, shall have to live without it :surprised
Again, thanks
