Announcing the first public beta of Virtual Mimic version .85. Virtual Mimic is a Microsoft Windows application that allows tutorial sequences to be created by recording mouse and keyboard activity which can later be played back on another computer that has the same software installed.
Some of the advantages over providing tutorials using a video codec
1) Small size ( easily download over the internet or sent via email )
2) The visuals can be in the highest quality settings with no impact on file size i.e. full screen, 32 bit colour, high screen refresh rate with no compression artefacts.
3) The software application is in the same actual state as the recording application was. You can examine the state of the software using all of the tools available in the application at any stage of the sequence. For 3d cgi purposes this means rotating the model, viewing it in both shaded and wireframe, etc.
4) Editing has a down stream effect. If you forgot to set a mode at the beginning of the sequence just record some new events activating that mode at the beginning and the application will now have that setting all the way through unlike video in which you would have to re-record the whole sequence.
Features
1) Inserting HTML Events allows text, audio, video and animation to be included in a Virtual Mimic sequence.
2) Insert and Overwrite modes enable the editing of sequences by recording new mouse and keyboard events that either insert between current events or overwrite events after the current insertion point.
3) Importing a sequence allows various sections of sequence to me recorded and perfected separately and latter imported into the final joined sequence.
