Sweet, I'm a big fan of the books. I like the colors, really reminds me of a cave like room. Keep up the good work.

Nice! U could have added a few more details to the flames tho, at once I took it to be light from a open door or something... And the floor looks abit... wrong. Looks like i bends downwards, and not strait. Fancy your style! Great first work, keep it up!

Velk> I hope I stayed true to the books, glad you like them too.

Silje> Yeah, the floor angle is wrong.. Time to learn perspective.

Hi Frogchild,

That's an original style. But you want some c&c?
Okay, here you go...

First the composition and the perspective.
Everything is focused to the 2 characters, and still you show a large piece of the fireplace in the right part where there's nothing going on. So everything is pushed to the upper left.
When you would make a crop of just the characters, it'll be better balanced and you'll loose nothing of the story. It'll still be two characters in front of a fireplace.

Yep, the perspective is off. It doesn't matter to me that it is not accurate. But the composition of the characters is very much from the upper left to the lower right. Like they're falling to the right. And the bottom line of the fireplace makes that feeling even stronger. So mirroring the background and making that line less angled would make a major improvement to the composition.
That way you'll also have a crossed composition that focusses on the horn, wich will become (with the crop) the center of the composition that way.

Shading.
You choose the complemantory colour of yellow (the fire) wich is blue/purple for the shadows. That's a very good idea. But you used so much black that the effect's gone. Specially in the shading of the girl. Take a look at the work of Tim Lee (Sleepless here on cgtalk, his website: www.leeillo.com ) He's a true master of coloured shading.
A solution for this might be to bring in a second blue/purple lightsource from the left or the front of the painting. Like there's also a moonlighted window somewhere out of view.

My 2 cents
Jeroen
