Hi all,

as I could see, there is no much progress in learning until you make decision for what game you want to make stuff.....
but, could you pls explain me a bit more this game-engine-editor stuff...
is it something like this...?
there are many engines, and game is made for one of them....there are good and bad engines, free or $$$, etc...do I actually need engine.????? if am going to make models exported, is it normal for me to have engine ?.....
now there are some game editors ( compilers? ), well, obviously that is something that will need, but is there some 3dapp-editor-gamesengine relation so that one will use different editors for different engines ?
are those editors free or $$$ ? are there unique editors with many exports...?
and also, is there many engines&editors or just few of them counts...ie like maxmayaxsilwave for 3d
what is renderware ? editor or engine?
"RenderWare Graphics 3.7 is the world-leading, high performance, open & extensible, truly multi-platform, 3D
graphics toolkit, empowering developers like never before to focus their talents on creating great content and gameplay."
so ??
saw that many ppl use it but am still not clear...this is all completely new stuff for me....have problems even with terminology...
what is compiler? for example
"Compiler - software that parses a high-level language, and converts source code to a binary executable program, that will run on Windows, Unix, or some operating system"
...in which way this relates to my workflow..??
is there a list of popular game editing tools which describes their purpose to ppl which dont understand this specific slang from game editing industry ?
and is there a list of " reccomended " tools describing their meaning to the kind of ppl from previous question ?
and is there page with screenshots of content of c/programfiles/....on averege leveldesigner`s hdd

thx all

Marko

Game engines are a tool to get you closer to your goal of creating a functional game. Nothing more, nothing less. They save you time only if they accomplish that purpose.

Engines can be useful both as a prototyping tool and as a software component. They are 'toys' in themselves since you can knock time off of creating a functional program.

There is no magic combination of tools. Marketing verbiage means nothing, and you have to use lots of trial and error to see what works well together.

What matters most is you finding a set of tools that suits your teams' workflow. Find the set of tools to help accomplish something that would enamour your user and their experience when they use your final product. Persistence when tools give you headaches, and continual objective 'fun testing' is the magic ingredient in most good games.

Models aren't fun. Blowing them up is fun. Racing them around is fun. Watching them play out a strategy is fun. Most of those functions are accomodated somehow by game engine features, or your code. Having a detailed understanding of how to modify the properties of exported models in real time is more of an art than a science.

thanx for response,

I am not interested in creating games on my own....just want to learn stuff to get involved in games creation as a 3d modeler.....to be precise, as level designer....
as first, I DO enjoy in making models, and I dont play games ( mistake? )...
I have put all this questions, cause have no idea about process of making levels, what softwares to use, what is concept behind, and so.....
words like console/engine/bsp/mod/compiling...means nothing to me...or, better, so far didnt.....right now am getting some info on those, and soon will be able to be more precise about my dilemas...
and to make things clear, I am experienced 3d designer using 3dmax ( and older ) for about 10 years...
