Hi folks...
I'm from the Netherlands, been learning Flame Flint Inferno for over half a year now at
Condor Post Production in Amsterdam, coming from a linear editing/effects background
and now enjoying the pleasures of FFI! (Shake rocks too, BTW)
Yeah would be nice to stay in touch, exchanging tricks an' all I hope...:-)
see ya!

Cool! I've been dabbling with 3D and Maya in particular too, although I couldn't render out anything decent to save my life...:-) Anyways it's interesting matter though, because as we all know 2 and 3D are becoming more one as we speak...as we are on that subject, anyone has tried out the new 3D/camera tracker in inferno 6 yet? We've got a beta of flint 9 on linux but apart from the new Master Keyer (which is great, by the way) and the implementation of the Colour Warper node in flint, I believe this new tracker is just in the
new inferno....I'm not sure if it's on flame....we'll see...
I'm sorry this maybe should be part of a new, "FFI on Linux/FFI 6 & 9" forum thread, but, if you think it should become one, let all of us know! It's more than one topic on fxguide.com already, but what the hell! Oh let us please exchange tips & tricks on this site, would be loads of fun!
ciao.

Hey guys,
I'm currently working at a post house as a runner and trying to learn Flame in my spare time. I was wondering if you guys have any tutorials or know where i could get any that might help me out a bit...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Here are some:
www.fxguide.com (http://www.fxguide.com) (news, tips & tricks, forums, links and other discreet stuff; loads of, but by far not just discreet!)
www.cmistudios.com (http://www.cmistudios.com) (tuts and more. Lots of it is Shake, Digital Fusion and Nuke but I think
there are one or two flame tuts in there...)
ftp://ftp1.discreet.com/web/pwd_tutorials/ (an discreet ftp site; no flame tuts but a lot
of old paint* and effect* manual pdf's...which should help you in a way because some terms
are the same... i hope :-) .....)
there's very probably more which I forgot and which I do not know of. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, fxguide is the best just because they've got loads of FFI-specific tuts & tricks!
well I hope this helps a bit...
happy flamin'

Ask your administrator to install the tutorial files and action that was included with the flame cds. That has great stuff for learning and it is free.

Hi Liam Here,
FFI, Flame,Flint Inferno. I guess. Why not Put 3D max in there too. Oh that's right it's the crappy half mutated brother of the good Discreet software.
I'm a Flame Compositor from QLD/NSW. I left our Post Production company in SYD when it bit the dust and am now working at the Gold Coast. We used a version of Flame 7.6 on an Octane mxe to do PAL animations, TVC's etc.
If you guys know of any Flame jobs going, please tell me because I am working in Architectural Visualisation here, which is shamefull and embarrassing.

Hey Liam.. You're working on the Gold Coast now? If you're looking for flame, inferno work, there's a company I used to work with a couple of years ago, by the name of Photon (http://www.photon.com.au). When I was there I was their inferno and flame guy, with some shake work done on a feature.. They're on the Warner Bros. lot next to that wave ride park. Not sure if they're hiring, but they're still around!

I have been in Contact with Photon, but due to the fact that the QLD post production industry is in a huge LUL at the moment, vfx studios are firing rather than hiring.
I'm really looking for work in SYD or Melbourne at the moment, because all my past experience has been with private visual effects projects, as opposed to Village Road show Blockbusters.
That's awesome that you worked at Photon, how did you go about attaining work there as a FFI operator, via resume/showreel, or did you know someone on the inside?

Aruna, you must be a Gun Compositor man,
Tippett studios is pretty high up the food chain. I have been trying to get a foot into the Film industry for 2 years . I graduated at the top of my class in 3D design/VFX at QLD College of Art, then tried for several jobs in the Post industry and missed out.
It's the FIRST job on a TVC or movie that is the hardest to get, after that I've got no worries.
If you have any tips or info, that would be great because I'm starting to consider another industry, like plumbing.
Aruna

Hey, everyone needs a plumber! Last time we had a leaky shower, he came in, charged 75 bucks an hour.. That's not too bad for a plumber fulltime... :)
I got contacted from Photon because one of my fellow coworkers that I was working with in Vancouver (BC), came from Australia, and he was going back.. He got hired as a 3D artist at Photon, then they were looking for people, so he told them about me, then I sent them a reel, and a week or so later, I was down there. He's an Animal Logic right now. Anyway, aye, there are a bunch of places that I know of down there that might be looking, but as you say, it's just as tough to break into a job there. A friend works at the Lab (http://www.thelabsydney.com.au) in Sydney. It's been a while. They also have a sister company called Mesh22 (http://www.mesh22.com). I've been on the Pacific coast for a long time, bouncing from Vancouver to San Francisco over the past six years. Some has been full-time, some freelance. Anyway, hope that works out.. Check out the Joblot Forum over at VFXtalk. There's a list of TVC and Film companies listed there that could aid your search.

Hey Liam,
I get the impression that the industry in QLD is pretty lean right now, but last time I was working up there, about 3 companies has FFI suites. Photon, Cutting Edge and Beeps. I know BEEPS has now changed its name to The Post Lounge, they had a flame and a flint. Cutting Edge had one inferno and one flame ( maybe two ). I don't know how easy it would be to get a shot on one without much experience though. I did a whole bunch of inferno/flame at AFTRS when I studied there but I am working in 3d doing fim vfx at present, because thats much easier to come by. There seems to be a lot of 3d going in sydney right now, well at least where I am... they are recruiting like crazy.
There are not too many discreet seats in this country and they are kind of hard to get onto.
You really need to focus on where you want to go. I know that the fact that I have worked as both a compositor and a 3d guy sometimes causes issues, to the point where i people doubt my skills as a shake/flame artist because I have maya stuff on my reel and vice versa.

That's about right. You do have to be a businessman sometimes and go for Demand. I'm doing stacks of work at the Gold Coast for Multiplex and Raptis doing all the visualisation for their Highrises all across the coast. I wish I could post some work online to show you but I'm a reasonably new member here. One interesting project is when we filmed an $60,000 architectural miniture then digitally composited people all into it and around it using Shake. It was great fun tracking the shots and doing some work with a miniture in the Architectural Industry. I guess with 342 Architectural Developers in QLD and 3 Post FFI houses I'm stupid not to just aim for a market that's booming at the moment.
It's fun to kick architects asses in 3D though, cause a strong VFX background=Super Detailed Images. I'll post some as soon as I can.
