Currently, I have been tasked with mastering the renderer in 3DS Max 4. I am looking to be able to speed up the rendering flow and maybe anyone can give me some advice on this subject.

Thanks

Can you be more specific about what you're trying to render? The more information you give us, the better we can help you out.

For the most part, the quickest way to render anything is fake as much as you can. Like GI, reflections, refractions; all that stuff can be faked with standard Max lights and materials if the scene is set up properly. And your rendering will be a lot faster.

Also, learn to use net rendering and set up a rendering farm if you can with multiple computers.

Rendering in passes makes everything nicer as well.

If you can, collapsing the modifier stack on your non-animating objects helps too (just don't collapse your working file, collapse a copy that you will just for this render so that you don't screw up anything) as does baking your textures to a single file (this is done in R5 and in a few third party plugins).

If you can you should use a composition application, like Combustion or After Effects for example, to do nearly all of your "eye candy" effects. This will save you from having to rerender your file to fix or tweak something like motion blur or DOF for example.

I am also a big fan of rendering in passes and cannot recommend it enough.

i know!!!! render i snap shot of the whole non moving stuff, put it as a env map, use metee for shadows, and the animaiton time would be much faster, i had to render a huge move, huge!!!, took me 30 mins with that technique, 5 hours without it:bounce:

I found that if I rub my computer's belly and talk dirty to it, it will render faster, just a little tip that works for me.

Otherwise do what they all said ^
