View Full Version : Still Life: weapon models
This is a render of some low-poly weapon models of our upcoming game which supports dynamic per-pixel lighting (similar to Doom3), specular highlights, and bumpmapping. The models and textures used in the render are the same used in-game. The texture sizes are 1024x1024 but we can support up to 2048x2048. Most in-game models will have three texturemaps, the base color, bumpmap, and specmap.

very well done but 2 things bother me
- this 'scene' would look much more realistic, and add to the overall effect if you placed the models in positions where they could actually be. I don't know if you'll understand this, its hard to describe. Like those models are just floating, or resting in ways that they would fall over. Give them a planted feeling, it would be alot better.
- Those grenades look kinda weird. Can you maybe post the reference you used? I haven't seen anything like that. They are not obtuse enough, way too spherical, and they are very flat, they have no grip on them, and the texture seems to be misleading.
well done overall, but it needs these little things to bump it up a notch
Thanks for the advice on the render scene. We'll see what we can come up with.
The grenades are based off m67 fragmentation grenades, which are indeed quite spherical. The textures could be improved, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by them being misleading. Can you clarify?

well when you look at the grenade model in your seen it seems really smooth and gives a false texture. Grenades are not usually smooth, so they dont slip and other reasons of course. So that's what i really mean.
I see what you mean, we need more "bumps" in the texture. We were discussing if it is really worth adding in more details for a small item like the grenade. Keep mind that these are in-game models and our use of high-resolution textures and bumpmaps, etc. takes a toll on the framerate. I am interested to know if gamers would care if some of the items were not at the same level of detail as the others.

personally i would :) i look at grenades in game just as any other weapon, they should be as realistic as possible.. and adding a little bumping into this would make it alot better.. but thats just me
You are right, we can add more detail in the bumpmap that would really improve it. Thanks for the input.

fragmentation grenades have "bump" if i can call them this way in order to fragment...more fragments, more damage to personnel..
how many polys is say the smg model?they look quite hi-poly for realtime gaming.
i think the knife would look better if it was stuck into the table
The smg is around 2500 polys I believe. A bit more with the attachable accessories such as stocks, suppressors, sights, etc. We have a higher polygon budget than many games but our rendering engine is fairly robust and we are targetting the higher-end hardware. But, efficient modeling is always a good thing. Most of the extra detail you see is really just the bumpmapping. You can see other renders and in-game screenshots of our game at our website: http://www.vaevictisgames.com
As for the frag grenades, there are some that have scoring in the metal like the MK II frags that help with fragmentation.
There are many variations to ALL weapons made. That include gernades and other equipment. Don't go yelling "hey that's too smooth for a gernade" b/c there are gernades that smooth.

Well i wasnt yelling, i was just suggesting that for a game like this i would rather carry something that looks more like a stereotypical grenade than a kiwi fruit
WarpedMinds brought up some good points. We posted looking for feedback. Although I don't think our grenades look like Kiwi fruit. :)

just a thought, but im pretty sure most grenades have writing on them that display which type of grenade they are, and some other information. when you do get close to finishing that model, i would suggest making a material that has that information on it to make it as real as possible.
Actually, the grenades already have writing on them. Hard to tell in that render.

It seems like there's just a tad too much bump map on the handle of the Glock. It looks like a stone handle more than a plastic/rubber grip. My suggestion would be to halve the bump amount and mayby make it smaller bumps.
Cheers,
Jeron

You are criticizing the look of the pistol, and you don't even know what pistol you are criticizing? That is not a Glock...it is a SigArms (Sig Sauer) P series. It looks spot on to me...
