I am currently working on a new bot, going to texture it as a rally car... next i would like to add some mud, dirt over it...

what is the best way to approach this,
putting some small mud objects on the bot
or
working with alpha's?

Depends on how you want the final dirt look to be, but you could use the built in dirt shader.

And for mud (more localized on the bottom-facing side) a fusion of Falloff and fine noise, mode set to levr in Diffuse. You could use this in the bump channel also.
