I just thought IŽd tell you of Gonzalo Garramunos new scene conversion plugin mrLiquid.
Its still a work in progress and only the source code is availible yet: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mrliquid/

This is a few lines from the read me files:

"mrLiquid was, I guess, more or less born out of two things: a) my return to
production after a one year hiatus and b) a bet with Imre Tuske.

We started discussing maya2mr and all the things we hated about it.
In passing I mentioned to them I was looking forward to, as part of an
upcoming huge VFX production, to be reworking it, but that Alias was being
extremely protective of a source code that, in my opinion, had little value
these days.
My main goal was to have something better than the free maya2mr and with
source code access.
Knowing the headaches that would lay ahead of me in this upcoming
production, I decided to give it a shot and see how far I got on my own
first. Albeit I have some good coding background, writing a converter
was never something I was very keen on doing so mrLiquid represents my
first stab at it.
Funny enough, I found it to be quite easy to do and in 3 days I had a very
solid converter up and many of the things that I thought were "hard" ended
up not being so. What you see in front of you is the work of only 14 days
(sleepless days, but 14 days nevertheless)."

..."Compared to maya2mr, these are the main things that are currently
not supported (yet):
1) Fur
2) IPR
3) Fluids
4) Particle rendering
5) Volume Lights
6) Render passes / Render Layers (*)
7) Packaged Phenomena (shading trees work, but not phenomena yet)
8) Lightmapping
The main reason for the above stuff missing is twofold:
a) I had no time to do it all in just two weeks :)
b) Some of those will require changing completely how that stuff works
in maya2mr as the maya2mr/Alias implementation of all of the above is,
imo, not that great.
I need to think on it for a while before I jump to code it in..."

For those interested download the sourcecode and read the included text files.
This could be good in the future...

Thanks for the link pixero, is there a "list" of things that alias are still to fix for their mental ray integraton, I mean ballpark, I have seen a lot of bugs and complaints posted but none in the same place.

Cheers

Maybe they'll annouce 6.0.1 at SIGGRAPH next week, I've been hearing hints of that floating around, but lets hope it's soon.

mrLiquid looks pretty promising. Hopefully, G.G. will finish this project (or someone else).

Heh, feels silly digging this old thread up, but beta 2 of mrLiquid is now out.
It almost looks like XSI's mr implementation :O
And Gonzalo has posted two demo movies here http://www.putfile.com/gga73

Wicked.

Am i understanding it right, that this is for MR Standalone only!? Still, it's looking very nice in the demo-vids!

Yes it is for standalone, i did some tests and its really good. I had just some propblems with IPR mode, you need to tweak the paramenter wait for mr to render and then tweak again, so its not that interactive. But its a beta version.Im really amazed.
