young_927 08-07-2004, 04:02 AM hello, for anyone who's working in the film industry.....

Well, it typically means 2048x1556, this would be for academy full aperature. A flat academy image is actually only 1828x1332. 4k is simply double (but 4x the amout of data) the size both horizontally and vertically, so 4096x3112 for academy.

Thanks Jer~
one more question~
so lets say I shot something on DV, and later you plan to transfer it to film,
you would output it 2048x1556?
and what format is the best so it won't lose resoluation?
From DV to After Effects?
Do you guys use TGA file?
thanks in advance~!
Well, up-resing like that usually doesn't work too well. But if you wanna try it anyway, I would do all my processing in flat, 1828x1332. Also if you're using a camcorder that's not 24p(24 frames per second), you're gonna have a hard time conforming it to 24p. NTSC (North America) video is 60 fields(30 frames) per second. Those fields will look horrible as frames without some sort of interpolation. As far as output formats, most film recorders will ultimately want cineon files. They are logarithmic instead of linear in their color curve. I advise you get the book Compositing for Film and Video, explains everything quite well.
