Blaaah..
Ackkk..
phooey...

I think most games have surpassed movies in quality of entertainment per dollar.
In MHO.

Sure why not, just another blite in the video game movie genre. (i.e. Super Mario Brothers, House of the Dead, Resident Evil 1 and 2,) Horrible idea!

Some producer is at lunch with another producer.

"Mkay Tad, this Doom thing is hot right now so we need to pounce on this one. I'm thinking we get Vin Diesel to play the hot shot hero that is....about to go on a weekend leave to see his wife. Then all hell breaks loose with CG demons and he has big guns and explosions. We'll get that hot chick from Pirates of the Carribean to play the love intrest, she owes me a favor. Ohh man this thing writes itself. Oh and start a buzz on the internet that we are writing it as a trilogy...cause you know that trilogy thing is hot now, what with the Lord of the Rings and Matrix."

You are fast. They only announced it, but you already have such strong opinions against it.

That's some serious forecasting abilities you have there! :)

Maybe it will be awfull, but I'm enjoying Doom3, and I think it could translate to a good sci-fi movie. At least good enough for me to wait before starting to trash it.

The movie would have to have another story written for it. I mean look at the game you just run around killing everything and unlocking doors. :D I'll bet they'll change it, throw a hot chick in, throw the token black guy in (that gets killed 10 minutes into the movie), and whoever happens to be the big new badass in 06.

If im not mistaken werent they suspose to make one along time ago, digging threw my old game books, the Doom 2 game guide has in interview from the maker and he said they were in the process of making a script and was going to start Arnold for the part of the hero. If you ever find the old doom 2 game guide check it out.

So uh....anyone up on the corporate ladder have any balls anymore? This is really stupid and boring to be playing things safe by riding the crap out of a hot thing. I think I'm inspired to make a CG short that depicts how spineless and weak the entertainment industry is getting.

I'm officially mad.

I believe it when I see it.

Doom movie has been in development ever since the first game came out. High-profile actors like Arnold Schwartzenegger and The Rock have been attached to the project at various points, and the film rights have been jumping from studio to studio. As I understand it, iD Software is pretty reluctant to just go for the easy money and want to hold a short leash on the progress of development. While it's probably a very wise choice creatively (House of the Dead, anyone?), it's been a factor that's contributed into delaying it getting made. That and about a billion other reasons ranging from the script, the availability of actors and directors etc.

It would make a neat summer popcorn movie, though. The premise of "a lone space marine is the only one standing against the forces of Hell" is pretty high-concept, so I see no reason why studios wouldn't want to get made. It just takes all the right people to get around the same table - unfortunately, that's easier said than done.

You can't bash it yet. Better movie to video game translations are getting made so why not the other way around? There's no way they are going to get better at it if they never try.

I think a Doom movie would be great. Personally I like the Resident Evil movie and I think a Doom movie could succeed in the same way.

I'm in the same, I'll belive it when I see it mode.

This buzz actually has been going on since the first Doom came out, and not just from fans but from ID idself. I was actually told in letter form long long ago from ID that they were "working on a movie." If there were going to do it, now would be the time.

We can only hope.

What's the point of making a Doom movie? The summer time is bigger than ever before for movies, you have to be careful at what kind of crap you'll be making. Half Life would be more logical for a movie with the 1984-ish world, but Doom? Please... big scary monsters and a big bad ass dude... that would be acceptable for b-serie movie from the 80s!

I'm afraid this will come out the same week as the Duke Nukem and Interstate '76 movies: as in never.

Right now Doom is riding high on the release of the new game but give it a month or two after the XBox version is released and no one outside of Doom fans will care about the franchise.

Not that I'm saying Doom: The Movie will never happen...
In short, I'll believe it when I see it.

Remember the Quake 2 movie that was "in production"? How about Wolfenstein? Mechwarrior? Max Payne? Pitfall? Where are these movies now?

I see a distinct pattern here. A much awaited game is released. There's a lot of talk from the publisher and developers about how they're "in talks with a studio" and how "a script is being worked on."

Calling up Fox and speaking to the receptionist is not "in talks with a studio" nor is copying game diologue into a Word document "working on a script." ;)

an absolutely dimwitted idea :/

Almost every game to movie translation has sucked hard.
Almost every movie to game translation has sucked just as hard.

why dont they just quit?
Doom the movie YEEEAAAAA WOOHOO i already know the plot! and just like in the game the marine will have NO NAME and will not speak! that will be sweet! and half the movie will be a guy walking around in the dark with a flashlight reading through pdas to find cabinet combinations OOOOO YEAAAAA........

(not knocking doom its pretty fun. but theres no way they can make the same formula enjoyable to watch in a theatre)

Jesus, where have you been?! Recent films have caught onto the "black guy dies first" trend. The new thing is to put in some rapper who, of course, lives through the movie so that he can finish up the obligatory rap song in the credits. ;)

Anyway... I personally would like to see a Doom movie. Sure, in the wrong hands, it could be another game-to-movie travesty. But in the right hands, maybe it could end up being something like Event Horizon? Probably not, but I've noticed the quality in movies based on videogames beginning to rise, although slowly. So I'd wait to see it before casting judgement.

On the subject of the Doom movie, I can categorically confirm it is definitely in production.

also this rapper during the whole movie will be saying "the black person always dies first, and he has to be a wuss.

I remember deep blue sea I wasnt expecting Samuel L Jackson to die. I didnt expect Saffron Burrows to die the way she did. that movie was extremely suprising.

Not sure how much you guys read trash literature, but when I was little I seem to recall reading these:

Doom: Knee Deep in Dead
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671525557/qid=1092058029/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/104-2286331-5682303?v=glance&s=books

Doom: Hell on Earth
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/067152562X/qid=1092058029/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-2286331-5682303?v=glance&s=books

Doom: Infernal Sky
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671525638/qid=1092058029/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/104-2286331-5682303?v=glance&s=books

Doom: End Game
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671525662/qid=1092058029/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-2286331-5682303?v=glance&s=books

I believe the link for the first book will exactly let you read the first chapter, as as I recall there IS a "hot chick" named Arelene, and the hero spends most of the first book trying to to find her on Mars. They are buddies ofcourse. The book is heavily based in what a character is thinking, I recall enjoying them quite a bit, they were responsible for sparking my interest in reading. I think I still have them in my closet, I should grab one and see if they are still "good" when you're not waist high.

However, if the books predictions are true, watch out for the Mormons. The end up being the last vestiage of human civilization on earth, and the largest resistance to the aliens, after the hero and the woman get back to earth.

Eventually they end up travelling at lightspeed to some other crazy planets, because ofcousre the aliens are not demons, they are genetically engineered soldiers meant to play on humanity's worst fears.

All and all, if you got 20 bucks, and a few hours, read it just because its Doom and you're waiting for your video card update to arrive. If nothing else its a novel and you can't blame them for filling it with too many flashy CG effects.

haha... and you always have to keep an eye out for those mormons...

I give it (the movie) 90% chance of sucking. I'll probably see it anyway though, just because it's Doom, but don't expect me to buy the DVD. That's about my stand on AVP right now as well.

This is excellent news, and it could be a truly great movie if it's done well. But if not, then it will probably suck just as bad as most other translations of video games to movies. If it turns out about as well as, say, Resident Evil, then I'll be happy, but I'll admit that I have a weakness for the movie and probably liked it more than I should have (the double whammy of Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez contributed to that a bit. )

The Doom movie would be more interesting if the producers had the guts to choose a more unconventional actor for the starring role. Using somebody like the Rock just makes it an action-movie cliche before it's even started. Can't immediately think of who would be a good choice, though. I can't imagine any of the obvious stars like Colin Farrell, etc., and I've written off most of the younger actors that are working nowadays.

lemme guess, its gonna take 4 years to shoot, be shot completely in the dark, and end up being 4 times shorter than any other movie released at the same time?

You take that back! Mortal Kombat was the cream of B-Movie action fun! :D

haha... Mortal Kombat has one major problem. How many people really would care to see that movie a second time? Once you've seen it you've seen it and that's it. Zero depth, little story, and no character development.

But on the other hand, it is full of cheezy villains, cool fight scenes, and neat (well, some of it) techno soundtrack. That makes it worth watching the first time.

The key to making a movie successful is making one that audiences will want to see over and over. If they come out with another Mortal Kombat movie I'll see it once, but if they were to come out with another Lord of the Rings (I'm specifically referring to the Hobbit on that one) movie, I'd see it over and over. Which would be more successful?

Mortal Kombat,
you know what, i like Christopher Lambert, but as raiden.... " ooh scary thunder god , come down from the clouds to whoop some ass" i think not,
the only remotly cool thing in that movie was those 3 ninja guys who look almost identical, reptile, sub zero and scorpion... the 20 mins they featured was cool, the rest....yeah well . it sucked.

i think doom would turn into a movie quite well ach. but i have to agree that i don'ty think paul anderson should direct it. althoug i like his movies he seems to be doing a\lot of films recently based on games. although they do look/are good i don't think he has the doom type mind to pull this movie off.

Doom isn't a bad subject but this isn't really anything innovative.I mean,if you've seen your share of b-movies or horror series then you probably know what to expect.

good you mention it i just did watch it on dvd last week =)

i must say i like it when they make a movie out of a game even the worst of those movies cause they are actually so rare you cant choose =)

and why you bashing the story didnt anyone see alien 1-4 ? just darkness some cool aliens and a creepy environment

it doesnt need a superintelligent suprisingly deep story to amuse the peoples sometimes good old popcorn cinema just rocks (i wouldnt wanna miss die hard, rambo just cause it they have no real story)
