Title: The Nightmare Factory
Name: Philip Straub
Country: Usa
Software:

A concept painting for a book project I'm working on. This image evolved from the daily sketches I've been doing as of late. I was very conscious of mantaining a controlled color palette and defining the scale. I really wanted the "nightmare factory" to appear massive withn the canyon. The images was mostly painted in Painter 8 with a little Photoshop mixed in and generally 1-2 layers throughout the process.
Critiques welcome. Thanks
Phil

Very nice atmosphere. I can't help thinking about the Machine world in the Matrix Revolutions.

Magicman: Thanks! I will admit I was surprised at the lack of comments here too. The piece took front page on Conceptart.org and they can be brutal over there with crits. Truth is I am happy to post the work and share it with the world....comments are simply a nice bonus:)

jeremoo: now that you mention it does kinda have that Matrix feel in an organic way. Thanks man!

Wow....Phil..this is amazing.

As a writer/director, I dream upon stumbling across a piece of work that conveys so much story, so much depth, and just an incredibly imaginative mood and setting that conjures up all sorts of thoughts and ideas.

Stunning.

Hey all!

Thanks so much for the kind words on the piece...I really do appreciate it. I haven't been able to reply becuase I was stuck in LA for Siggraph awaiting Hurricane's Charley's exit so I could return to Orlando. I am sure glad to be back!

I see a few people would like to see a high resolution version of the image. I'll post one tomorrow...gonna rest now.

Home sweet home.

Hey Guillermo! Thanks for the kind words on the painting.

Yeh man...Siggraph was kinda crazy, very busy, very fun! Sorry I missed viewing your portfolio...I would've liked to have seen it. Do you have a website, I'd be more than happy to give you some insights.

You're very welcome for the autograph...I hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for stopping by the booth!

Alright Phil, now you are really starting to fill me with jealousy! <shakes fist>
Your work is always stunning, this piece is no exception. Wow.

It was great finally meeting you in person at Siggraph this year. You are as cool as your artwork for sure. You gave a really nice presentation at the Gnomon/CGNetworks booth, it made me want your D'artist book even more...

I can't wait to see the hundreds of pieces of art that you have been doing but aren't permited to show because of your NDA. You keep on improving and that's saying something..

zegritch: The painting was done primarily with Painter with a few finishing touches in Photoshop. Pretty much one layer for the whole process but the piece changed pretty dramatically quite a few times.

meats: thanks so much for all the kind words man! I always say, you're only as good as your last piece. Keeps me on my toes.

Really great to meet you as well...as I said those animations of yours were amazingly impressive, I sure wish I had those skills. The Zbrush stuff was pretty amazing as well....I think I'll be hitting you up with some tips:) I sure wish I could make it one of your classes out there on the west coast.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you focus again on your personal work. Post away my friend!

Beers at E3 for sure.

Phil

Very nice man, the spikes on the side really give it a nice sense of perspective looking up. The birds are a nice touch too. You mentioned going for a sense of size and magnitude, which is done well. The only thing I can think of that might be taking away from this slightly is the canyon walls surrounding it. The percieved size of something is always going to be smaller if you put larger or taller objects next to it. But it seems the canyon is part of the backstory so probably unavoidable. Even considering this tho, you did a nice job of keeping it sepparate from the background (the canyon walls) with the change in contrast.

sweetness. i'm starting to see a face in them thar tree over there. i kinda see a cthulu monster in there of some sort. i dunno, maybe it's just me. hehe. the blue light in the center looks like the mouth/beak of an octopus and the red lights all look like eyes o.O scary ~

for some clarification...this image and the "The Hive" are two paintings that are associated with the "book project" I mentioned in "The Hive" thread.

I... I ... just feel it crawl up my neck, making me shiver... hearing the sounds of this image. Its a bit too sentimental, but i am about to cry... this is perfect. It is most beautiful horror, a childhood-memory gone wrong, the childhood-nightmares, that really came from places like this.

I will work very hard to one time recieve a level like this. the idea is so enormous, so deeply draining....

*shivers*
