View Full Version : Purchasing 3D Studio Max 4 or 5
Eukwk 08-02-2002, 10:30 AM Hi
I have always wanted to get 3D Max and was wondering if some of the UK residents on this forum could give me some advice.
Firstly I have been to the web site and have found some locations in the UK that sell max 5 but, well i dont trust them. I would rather buy the package driect from Discreet themselves. Is there a Discreet UK branch of the company ?
Through research I have found Max 5 to cost from £2300 - £2600 pounds not includnig VAT. Has anyone found a cheaper price anywhere and if so i could lov to know where.
As Max is so expensive I was wondering if it is still possbile to buy Max 4 anwhere, and if so has the price of Max 4 gone down because Discreet has launched Max 5. It would seem illogical to sell both max 4 and 5 at the same price. Thats like buying a laptop and a laptop a lvl down in quality at the same price.
On the web site it says no one outside of america and Canada can buy driect from Discreet themselves, is this true ?
Lastly does anyone have any good advice for someone looking to buy 3D Studio Max 4 or 5.
Thanx very much, any help would be appreicated

Or.. if anyone knows of a good place in the UK outside Discreet where to buy 3dsmax I would very much like a contact address. Both 5 and 4.
Where have you (uk residents) bought your copy of Max ?
Thanx

I know that resellers look to be a bit weird sometimes but they can be trusted. You do not have to pay immediately when you place your order, in fact most resellers offer a "do not pay for X days" plan and they can also offer financing and other deals to help encourage you to buy from them. Since it sounds like you have already done a bit of research, pick the one that you like the most and go for it.
As for purchasing Max R4, you simply cannot. Discreet is no longer selling Max R4 only R5 and you will not be able to find a legit version of R4 for sale. Please note that you will likely not find a reseller who has R4 in stock because the majority of the resellers do not actually stock the software that they sell, they take and order, place it with the company, and the company ships them the software that they need.
I hope this helps you out a bit. I know that it is a somewhat scarey endeavour that you are going into due to the sheer amount of hard earned money involved, but you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanx for the reply. Yes it is daunting :)
Ah so you cant buy Max 4 anymore then.. umm. And when you buy max from a shop / company in England that company orders it from Discreet themselves. Ah that makes sense. Im assuming because they do that, the price wont vary much at all because your really buying it from Discreet in America.
Ive just got to decide whether I can afford it now :) £3000 is alot of money.
Thanx, any other advice from anyone else is still appreciated. All advice is good advice.

Most professional graphics software is a lot of money, but if you are good at it (which I hope you are since you are going to buy it), you really shouldn't have any problem finding enough work during the course of a year (even after hours stuff) to pay for the cost of the sofware.

And remember, if you use max to make money you can put it down as an expense in your tax return, and save a bundle on your taxes.

4000£, seems a lot, you could try other countries as the European Market is liberated now, I looked In Belgium, The Netherlands and Finally got Pixel3D in Paris, Paid 4000€ (EUROS, VAT included) for Max4 withe upgrade Max5 (waiting for it now), this was 4 weeks ago, paid cash and the posting; 27€; wasn't included.
The most expensive dealer asked 5800€, really too expensive, just mail them all and ask the price, it's your right now to buy where you wish, just do it,
It's a bit like bank-accounts, a lot propose you survices of this and of that and finally when you need them because the combination Illustrate and Skin and Polygon makes Max crash every 10 minutes, nobody won't or can't answer, the only help are the Discreet specialists (if you can get to them, you should be a big and important client) and the Forums, not the reseller.
Good luck
