I’m looking at doing an animation with a close up of a glass with water being poured into it... so my question is; are there any tutorials of plugins that can simulate water??

This is what I found so far http://www.nextlimit.com/realflow/index.html
and I like the results but the whole Idea of using an external program and then importing the mesh into max smells fishy to me...

Any Ideas anyone??

For your specific needs - Realflow is without a doubt the best app for you.

I know what you mean about having a seperate app dealing with the dynamics - however, Realflow does work (almost) hand-in-hand with max. You can export your scene to Realflow (i.e: your glass) - including any keyframed animation you might want. And the import procedure is very simple.

The biggest downside is the calculation time - you can get satisfactory results with a small amount of particles in RF, but to get really "fluid" water you'll need a shedload (if only for tight mesh generation) - which means your processor's going to be tied up for quite a while sorting it all out :(

But of course - once you have that - you can import the mesh into max using RF's plugin set and bingo! - you've got water!

And problems with the plugin/settings...etc - let me know :D

Thanks AJ :) I'm checking it out right now and so far so good... I'm very impressed with the speed and the quality of the animation...

One question... It sound to me like you use it a lot, do you prefer to export the particles or the mesh from real flow into max? ...which is faster and which gives superior results??

I always take out the mesh from Realflow... it's slightly slower to process (however long per frame it takes to createthe mesh) - but not that much of a chore.... plus you can have realflow optimise the mesh on it's creation, which means your scene in Max will be less dense, the RF mesh import has a number of handy settings too.

It's up to you really - experiment, but personally - I always let RF generate the mesh.

Hope this helps!

:D
