In lightwave, it has a native plugin surface baker and a plugin u can purchase called microwave (which also allows for normal mapping i believe). unfortunately both of these guys have to start up the renderer for it to bake. Be kool if you could bake per object with its own panel or viewer. I get scared thats its about to crash, really. With so many other app users here, how does maya, Cinema oe max handle surface baking. Do you have to render ...does any guessimate the time it will take to bake?

Also displacement baking in messiah would be a nice feature with the subpoly (did i get that right) rendering so if you have terran, you can bake this out and bring it back and concentrate onother things. Now if you add an effect to an object and save the object..it saves it out at what ever the keyframe you were on sorta like Lw's save transformed object. Thats kool.
There is also transformed sequence in which you can pull out what you need.
But taking adavntage of messiah's dispalcement rendering whould be even cooler.

with maya, its either a plugin or set up in a shader network(I do recall someone writing a tutorial on Surface Scanning in a maya shader. Check the Spiraloid forums archive.)

messiah doesn't have a function to generate Normal maps or displacement betwween two models, but there are free utilities out there designed just for that purpose.

check out Nvidia's Melody on their developers page, and I just stumbled onto ORB

while looking for an MD5 importer.(doom3)

Unfortunately Melody needs a PixelShader 2.0 compatible graphics card. :banghead:

Use the ATI normalmapper then. You should be able to do a search here or in spiraloid for it. I would recommend looking for it on spiraloid as some people go over how to work with it.

Looks interesting.

Another reason for some form of dispalcement baking is that all those great definitions that messiah can bring to the forefront can be realized in a marquiette such as www.3darttopart.com (http://www.3darttopart.com)

Yep a Tool like Microwave would be great !

I am keen to buy Massiah animate but would buy Studio if it could surface bake like Microwave/Lightwave or Mental Ray/3dMax.

BTW Julez I think Microwave can bake individual surfaces, there is an option to bake selected surfaces only in the Microwave settings tab then you can "render selected"
