View Full Version : playblast multi-views
paul.yan 08-04-2004, 12:21 AM I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to playblast multiple viewports into a single movie clip. As an animator, it's time consuming to show off walk cycles without having to playblast front/side/perspective and take the 3 files and composite them with After Effects or whatever 3rd part app. Maybe its a stretch and I'm just lazy, but is there a MEL script out there that will be able to do this? If there's anyone who works at Alias - it'd be a REALLY cool thing to implement for.. Maya 7? Just my $0.02

I wonder how hard it would be to make a script and or plugin that would allow you to make a Playblast....BUT...give you the option to say Set it to use Perspective view for frames 1-30 then switch to Side View for 31 to 60..etc.. Rather than the standard 1 Drop Down One Frame set window...there would be say 4....and you could either use them or not... IE... I only have it use Pers and Side...but tomorrow I might want to Playblast Pers, side and top..so I'd use 3 of the windows...and if you didnt want to use some you'd just set them to blank or something..... Wish I knew Mel....I too would love a script or a plugin to do this.
Ok, ROUGH Picture I made in Photoshop....something like this maybe? 1st is how the Playblast and Render Globals Are... 2nd is how it'd be nice to have the Playblast
all you'd do is tell it to switch to a dif camera at a certain frame....how hard can that be? though a nice GUI would be sweet...as apposed to having to script it each time...

Why isn't standard? It's kinda obvious. It's great to see your animation from 3 views. They should include that, allong with the option to change the mouse settings for panning, rotating and zooming. That'd be great

While I'm still dreaming, here's what I'm looking for:

Essentially, the "Current Layout" is a video screencapture of Maya's working windows. I guess the only consideration would be that if you had any non-camera viewport in your layout, like the Outliner, Hypershade, Dope Sheet, etc. it would playblast too. This could be advantageous also - it would be cool to see the Blendshapes' sliders go crazy in one of these playblasts :)

Thats a great Idea too paul.yan! I'd also like to see that option too. Both options would be nice. As with your Idea I'd feel like I'd have to Playblast at at least 800x600 in order to really see all that was going on depending on the scene....since it might be split 4 ways.... but in simple scenes like a char walking it be awesome even at 320x240!
Great Idea! Now we just need a Mel Master to stop in here and hook us all up!
BUMP!

Here is an idea to a solution, that I am pretty confident would work:
Create a mel script that playblasts all four views seperatly (using mel to set camera of view port with "lookThru" command after each playblast).
After four views are playblasted seperatly, use TCL (http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActiveTcl/) with QuickTimeTCL (http://hem.fyristorg.com/matben/qt/) to automaticly composite the four views into one.
I have use the QuicktimeTCL extension to make some pretty nifty playblasting tools, and it's all free :)

Hi,
just look for the Koshigaya Maya Script Suite here in the Forum.
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=154088&page=1&pp=15
There's a Script included for switching trough Cameras while Playblasting (or even while playing the Animation in the Viewport.)
You can say "Use Persp from frame 1 to 23 and then switch to Camera1 for Frame 24 to 50 and then ... etc..."
Also you'll get a FrameCounter etc in your Viewport, so you can easy see in wich frame you are in your playblast.
(The Script let's you render this too! If you are using MentalRay you can do one batch render with your predefined Cameras and MentalRay renders your desired Camera for each Frame)
Au'revoir,
Aya
PS: The Script of the Name in the ScriptSuite is "Koshigaya Camera Manager"
