Bump up the translucency and turn off shadow casting properties for the lamp shade object. This should hopefully take care of it.

for this, i used bright light settings, had something behind the translucent object to cast a shadow, and used a mixture of low transparency and high translucency.

You could use a hidden lamp shade (hidden from camera, not from rays) with the correct transparency settings for your shadows. And use different lights for each lamp. One light that lights the visible lamp from inside, and the hidden lamp is excluded, and one that casts the shadows from inside the hidden lamp, and has the visible lamp excluded.
Thats a fail safe workaround though. You could probably do the trick with one lamp, after some heavy tweaking.

BTW Jeremy, your trick seems to work, but the curtains have a nylon feel to them rather than a thin fabric.

Hi theazz,

You could try the plugin SKA shader. Here's the tutorial which also contains the link to the plugin.

Hope that helps.:)

Seems you were using a spotlight with shadowmaps, test with raytrace in lights and render panel.
Very nice pic JeremyHardin!
