I am currently doing a course in 3d animation & visual effects using 3d studio max v6. I am wanting to upgrade my video card but my budget is limited. I can afford something around the range of a radeon 9800 pro but I know that is more of a gaming card. I was wondering if there is anything else that would be better that is in a similar price range as I don't think a Quadro FX is within my reach just yet. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ati FireGL card, should be about same as radeon, about 400 bucks for lowest fire GL. lemme find a link.... there (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1)

ok ass you can see from there, the lowest is quite cheap, although I myself would go with at least the 400 dollar one. hope I was of help ;)

killanet, take a look at this thread. I'm using some drivers for my Radeon that enable the FireGL-features. Works great!

I think it is good, what is it you do tho? Games animation, Movie animation? Personally I do games, and the card you can afford is just fine for me. ;)

yes but for what purpose? game modeling/animation is a lot less stress on the card than movie modeling/animation.

I would get the card you can afford either way though, it's a good card for any job imo.

Petmoi, which drivers did you end up using, and can you run the card at full speed now?

At the moment we are doing game type modelling (mainly poly's) but later I hope to do a workshop in Maya & XSI because my goal is to work doing movie effects. I first stared modeling in Rhino & I still use that a little bit.

I ended up using the drivers from:

http://www.hardwarelab.ru/soft.php

On the right of this site there is a "FreeFireGL Professional Driver Pack for ATI Radeon" to download.

Drivers work great on 3d applications, but games crash regularly. Thinking of switching back, since I got the urge for gaming again. =) I did get my card to run at full speed again, used a bios from an official ATI 9800 Pro Card. =)
