I'm off to uni soon and I really need to find one. I've spent 5 hours researching courses and still I'm stuck.

Problem is, I'm not specifically against other software, or expanding my horizons, but I really want to do lightwave on my course.

Bournemouth is all max based and I'm not sure if I'd get in because my maths is very weak.
What are the best places to do a degree. I have a strong portfolio, but like I've already said, I'm a very "visual" artist, not a mathematician.

Heres a few pics out of my portfolio if your interested in a peek. http://www.rothdomain.freeserve.co.uk/3dportfolio.htm

I'm doing an a level in It, Art and buisness studies.

Can anyone help?

If not I'll post around, maybe put this in the general forum.

Cheers in advance

Simon

There were some chaps over at the www.spinquad.com (http://www.spinquad.com) forum a few weeks/months back who were attending this college http://www.rave.ac.uk/ . Apparently they were using Lightwave, they even have potential work placements on the Cpt Scarlet show if memory serves...

Check out this link at the Newtek forum: http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18852&highlight=mattoo

I wouldn't discount Bournemouth, if you can get in, you should. It is very highly regarded and the graduates get a lot of (often unwarranted) attention from the industry. Others have to scramble around like everyone else, Bournemouth really gets you a shoe-in to the big studios (they have a long history with ILM).

hey

theirs a course in paisley uni (near glasgow), its a media course but its got a couple of lightwave modules. but to be honest, its a bit of a crap uni and a crap course, the lecturers havent really got a clue about lightwave, so id probebly leave it to be honest with u.....

ull learn more yourself anyways, so id prob go to a better course (even if it is different software) u can still learn lightwave at home.

cheers

Yeah I would love bournemouth, but I doubt I'll pass their entrance exam because you have to sit a maths paper.

My friends bro went there, graduated. Then straight away worked on walking with dinosaurs, then got work straight after for Lord of the rings. Now hes working for the new king kong film. Earns £1-3 grand a week.

I think I might check out ravensbourne. bournemouth and portsmouth as well, Cardiff is an option. I dont want to go too far north, not because I'm prejudiced or anything, but i just cant understand some accents because I have damaged hearing.

Is living in london too expensive for university students? I'll have nothing but any loans and £2500 savings I've got.

I worked with quite a few people who went to Bournemouth - I'm constantly bombarded with hearing about their mates from Uni who are now hob-nobbing with Lucas and "doing lunch" with Spielberg. Ok, slight exageration - but only slight.

The rent in London is the thing that'll kill you - that's why ONLY students can afford to live there, they get all kinds of breaks. You should atleast be able to get halls accomodation for the first year, and flat share from then on - it's not too bad. Living costs and travel are pretty much the same cost as the entire South East so that shouldn't be a problem.

The Uni's do often take this stuff into consideration, for example when I was going to South Bank Uni all those years ago they used to repeat many of the lessons in the afternoons, when they could, so that you wouldn't have to pay rush-hour peak fares on transport.

I've just been offered a place at Sunderland. It's for an MA course though. My first Degree was in Fine Art. It's in Electronic Media and Design, so it's not a dedicated 3D course, but they've got all the equipment (mainly Maya and Max), in fact every 3D app apart from Lightwave. When I told them I used Lightwave they said fine, use Lightwave. I dont think they are that interested in what you use, they just want to see what you can produce.

I would keep an open mind when it comes to what you use, I intend to use anything I can when I'm on the course. Don't restrict yourself to Lightwave. You have to think what the 3D industry might be like in two or three years when you leave and look for that dream job.

Good luck with finding a place. Have you thought about Swansea? I know the guy who runs the course, he also organises the SANDS festival every year. They seem to have a good setup (Maya). The person modelling the new BatMobile for Batman graduated from there last year. There is quite a good scene down there, and they do speak English!! Take a look at www.aspectratioswansea.com.

I just wish they had 3D design degrees when I did my first degree. You lot are spoilt these days!

Regards

Andy
