View Full Version : Still - B17 flying Fortress
PoPpiN 08-01-2002, 11:31 AM Impressed by all the great artwork in this fantastic forum.
I've decided to post one of my pictures.
The Mesh was made in '99 for a school project and now I did an re-render with an sky environment.
All made in 3D Studio Max except for some small post effect made in Photoshop
Hope you like it
Regards Ernst

The wings look a little too thick, and they're seem to be angled down in an odd way from the fuselage. The top turret is also missing ;)

wow thats fantastic.. v v nice
Very, very nice picture... but... i think B17 is a very heavy plane so on ur pic it seems to dive... like a stuka... i don't feel the heavyness of the plane...
but the environment, model and colours are vey beautiful...

Thanks for all the kind words
to answer some of the questions:
This particular model (B17 G) doesn't have a top turret it uses a twin machine gun mounted at the back of the cockpit
The hole model is build as close as the real measures of the airplane, everything is (or should be) like the real thing
It does look like a pretty dramatic dive the big B17 is doing but it is because of camera angle. I might wanna redo that but I still like the dramatic angle, which give the B17 some kind of fear and respect.
the wings attachment to the fuselage looks weird but that because it is weird, I didn't make them as one object (cause of my modelling skills back in '99 weren't as good, and it did make it easier to me:)

that is a great picture, I love to see a good model that is actually textured and put in an environment.
Great work :applause:

niceeee, most of the crits i have are already out on the floor, just wanted to say that i like it, it has a very painterlyt approach which i love, the sky backdrop is schweet. do you have plans to animate? I am finishing my FW190 this weekend maybe we should talk:deal: would also love to see the wire if you have the time.

Hi Danoku
Thanks for your comment, I'm actually working on some animation right now, I'll show you if I ever get done.
I would love to see your ****ewolf when your done (you can post it in this thread or email it)

Love the Messerscmidts! (is that how you spell it?) Schnell! Feuer! Kill der Englander!
You guys have got to get your planes together for a dogfight
btw how did you do the sky texture?

:applause: I just took a look at your Virtual Aircraft Website:applause:
Love the models, especially the Brewster b239: He's soooo cuuute! I wanna do a dogfighting animation now!! That's the only downside to this site: You see so much that makes you want to drop what you're working on and start something else!

Awesome Man!
But I don't like that diving angle too.
But man, you wrote that all is made in Max. Sky too?? I can't believe .... if yes, write how!!!

Hi again
The Sky on the BF109 is actually rendered in max and put in photoshop for color correction, brightness and flare
- made a gradient background in max
- made alot of particle systems (cloned the first one, but with bit of a variance) put two lights in, one to fill the top of the clouds and one for the bottom
- face map material - used a mask with a radial gradient with little noise to mask out a noise map (smoke map)
- blurred the image in photoshop and adjusted the brightness with a gradient layer and (yes i know) put a lens flare in the right hand corner
the sky on the B17 picture is a real life photo of a sunset also adjusted in photoshop with a gradient layer and some color adjustments, then put as a background in max.

Hi JerryB
I'm very impressed by all the aircraft you have on your site, really nice models with awesome materials.
How long has it taking you to make that bunch.
Hope to see more work from you

The stuff on my site is about 3 years of work, perhaps a little more. Glad you like it :)

The dreamy light and sky on the B-17 pic is very nice.
But the lack of accuracy really puts me off. The lens flare is a bit cheesy and the diving angle... I don't know... Rotate the plane a bit to the right (so you see part of the bottom wing) and it'll be better :)
The Messerschmitts are really too blurry to give any crits on them.
Keep working on them though :) I always love to see other 3D aviation artists' work :)
