View Full Version : poly_plane - reverse subdivision
lowkey 08-01-2002, 10:32 AM hi,
is there a smart method of reducing polycount on subdivided polygonal planes ?
i'd like to reverse the subdivide function i applied to several faces earlier !
btw, the reduction shall only affect selected faces, not the whole object ...
i already tried polygons -> reduce, but this deformed my whole mesh to unrecognizable polytrash ! :hmm:

Dunno really - I ususally optimize by hand. You could try to set the edges you don't want reduced to hard. I think it will triangulate them but you could run Quadrangulate to get rid of the extra edges. Or try merging vertices with different tolerances.
I know there is a plugin which is weighted somewhere. That is you define which areas are important and which can be reduced alot. Don't remeber where I saw it though...
I think that particular object you have in that picture should be a 10s job to clean.
Just select all the small polygons, then delete 'em, now change the selection mode to verticles, select all the verticles in the object and press delete (Doesn't matter how many verts you select, as Maya won't delete the crucial ones anyways, I know this sounds scary, but try it). Now the only thing left is to append a new polygon to the hole... et voila! :)
Your problem is propably alot bigger, but just wanted to share that, sorry if that sounded too simple.
try "Progressive Mesh v0.6" - Sibben is that the plug? with
this one u can paint weight u want reducing
highend3d.com u can find the script ok wait ....

For something like this I would just select all the interior verts and use the delete vertex tool. You can find it in the edit polygons menu. Pressing delete with the vertecies selected won't do it, and the tool has no hotkey by default. The delete vertex tool will remove all the verts you don't want and leave the face intact.

That's the one. The guy who wrote it had quite an informative website too. With cows of course. :)
