I just bought the book and love it. I am now beginning to learn Maya and it has all the basic concepts and terminology laid out nicely. I recommend the book especially for newbies but that maybe you will still need something else to dive deep into the program.

My advice is unles you have no knowledge of 3D in generall, The Art of Maya is not the best way to spend your hard earned cash. You can get more from online tutorials and the docs that ship with the product.

Also, dollar for dollar, minute for minute, nothing beats the VHS/DVD collection from Gnomon. I'd rather have one of those tapes than any three Maya books you can dig up. Same goes for the Alias courseware collection.
