Is there any reason why i shouldn't use the twist attribute in a RPIK solver, to control the knee orientation?

Sure... as a matter of preference. Some people like to control the knees on a slider and it's easy enough to set up. But this doesn't mean you can't have a pole vector and use twist. They aren't really an either/or situation.

I'll generally offer both in a leg rig. One "Auto Pole Vector" hanging off the pelvis with a twist attr added to the local foot control. Then a blended switch to a manual Pole Vector with a visible controller. The auto/manual PV switch will also manage the visibilty of the manual PV handle.

And if MoCap ever becomes involved, there may be a thrid, slave PoleVector object that may get PointConstrained to MoCap source for resolving or retargeting purposes. Another use for the third PV is when you need to blend from manual to externally oriented knee PV's for ground contact assistance.
