i used to do this in 3.0. seems not to work and i forgot how to do it in 4.0

i need to [hilight select] a lot of facets and i want only the ones that are facing the camera to be selected once i [highlight select] them...
the problem is right now when i [highlight selcet] them they get selected as well as the ones behing them...
any solutions?

i tryed turning off backculling on the preferences window.. but it is locked... any help could work...

select your object.
in the attribute editor look under the mesh component display options.

you simply need to turn backface culling on to full. this way is much simpler than using your preferences due to the ability to toggle so easily.

incidently, if you want to unfreeze it in your preferences and do it that way...you just need to look at the bottom of the option window and turn on backface culling there...then you will have the option to check it on at the top of the window as well.

An even easier way is to go via Custom Polygon Display. Then you don't have to set it for each object. Map it to a hotkey, it has a lot of nifty little settings.
