Are you going to paint something instead of leaving it a collage? Like, this is just your sketch, correct? I mean no offense, but right now its obviously pieced together from photos.

imothep85
02-02-2002, 03:49 AM
this is NOT a photo, i have DRAWING AND PAINTING IT, from photoshop, this technique is a "matte-painting" fx.
im use all pencils whit photoshop and the filter "noise" for creating dust in the walls, and ground etc.
Is NOT a finished picture is just the beggining :)

I'm sorry mate, I still don't buy that this is painted. I'm a photorealist, I know what goes into making something look like a photo . . . you have several very crisp elements with obvious, akwardly blended transitions between them. All your tutorial shows me is that you can trace softcore porn . . . it looks just like all the tutorials I've seen by people who were trying to cover up the fact that they were tracing. Your construction lines were laid in after you traced the outline of the figure. You didn't construct that pose out of your head with those lines.

There's no harm in using photo reference, or even snippets of photos to get textures in a matte painting, but at least admit that you're doing it. Because there are those of us who can tell, and we're often in a position to decide your fate in a job interview.

And if I'm wrong, and it is painted, then you should consider making your paintings look less like collage.

Well..doesnt really matter anyway..a few key elements are missing...such as plant life...an airlock/entryway...

I think this would of been more believable had he posted it in 3 weeks..instead of the first day...

Well, it's quite easy to prove if it's from scratch or not, no? Just post your WIPs. You must have some other saved files of this. Or show your layers.

I mean no offence but I'm also a bit sceptical here...even Craig Mullins needed some days to finish his full blown paintings. But if it really is your work then great stuff and looking forward to seing more of you!!

But I aggree with Lildragon...what's your hurry?

Well, Sir. I must admit to some doubt. However, we must all agree that there will always be someone better than we are. Fact of life. So, if you could provide a larger image, or wip pictures, I'm sure that everyone would be satisfied. If this is truly painted from scratch, then you are one of the finest artists I've ever seen.
Gotta prove it, though. :)

I think Craig could do that in a day, if he had a clear vision. It's low res remember, which makes it so much easier! It does have some funny composition, but in general everything seems smoothly thrown in-none of the bizarre lighting you'd expect from photo comps. So good job. And I think you two should square off, if only because I'm selfish and want to see what you'd come up with(hey, that's a compliment :]

Wiro
02-02-2002, 07:59 PM
Indeed...and if anything then these posts should be taken as the greatest compliment :)

Yeah, Craig could probably come up with something like that in a short time, but how many people like Craig are there that just suddenly pop up from the blue? ;)
And, erm, I might read your name differently, but the 85 after your name, doesn't that indicate your birthyear? 17 years old and this kickass?

Anyway it's not really all that important if it's photobased or not, is it? It's a nice piece with great lighting and composition.

I thought it was a modelling challenge though (with possible front/back drawings, though I can't see how that's possible with a landscape)...

Rules are made to be bent, but I'm getting a bit confused now :)

wiro, if you read the rules it CAN be 2d but there has to be 3 images, front side and 3/4 view.

I just wanted to clairify that my skepticism should in no way be taken as a form of flattery. This is not a case of envy. I have proven numerous times that I can make photoreal environments from scratch:

http://www.bprince.com/AmericanFlatRepriseBig.jpg

The problem I have with imhotep's piece is not that its "just too good" . . . its that it looks like a damned collage of other people's photos.

That's no compliment.

This is my last post to this thread, I'm tired of bringing it to the top.

Plus I should be working on my entry . . .

Ballistic: I meant to say that IF this pic really is fully painted THEN these posts should be taken as a compliment. If it's a collage then I give you right. But it looks like you've made up your mind already without giving him a chance to prove himself? Anyway, I'm looking forward to see your submission, you've always made nice landscapes.

Methinks I'll go character myself :)

Joe: yeah, I read it. That's what I meant with front/back view. Though I can't see how you can do that well with a landscape, even a 3/4 view. The above pic is none of those.

Also, making such a picture would involve colors and proper shading. This goes in the direction of textures. It's a modelling challenge so textures are not really to be used. And, oh, well, I'm just confused that's all. But that actually belongs to another thread, sorry.

Wow Balistic. You certainly are outspoken. I can't wait to see your submission, it will no doubt be spectacular. Personally though, I like the image that Imothep posted, and I'm not particularly concerned with the method he used to create it.
I am a little suprised that you have taken such an extremely personal stance on someone else's work, making judgements on the methods used to create it.
The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes.

Dispite how harsh Brian's comments apear to be I would have to agree with him. Its a great start to the image, lets hope you can take this as a good template and use this as a reference for the environment you build. As for the post
quote"

"

your work is more-big complicated? I wouldn't say so, and I'd also mention that type of post sounds like troll bait, setting up proper lighting and surfaces to make a 3d scene convincingly real is a lot harder than cutting and pasting in photoshop. Being a good matte painter means you will likely be taking from photo's when creating your matte, there's only a handful of people I know who could convincingly create a good matte from scratch. Anyway not to get down on you just remember that there are a lot of industry profesionals on this board so be more careful on how you present yourself. Don't be afraid to admit that elements are taken from photo's, matte painters do it all the time, however if you sing otherwise and then are found out, you start to get a bad reputation, and those tend to follow you around.

this is a documment traducted for me in english:
Sorry guys, i make a big mistake. Well, like I said, my english is really bad. I would like to say that it's an old work but I rebuild it in one day.
In fact, the first work made a complete week for completion.
I'm really sorry for the confusion.

I have to say that i don't beleave that someone could build-paint such a well constructed body just from outlines without a form study under the final image. Could we see that study?

yea i never got a chance to see the 'wip', and after reading everyone's comments i'm really interested in seeing what could cause such a controversy so early on in the challenge

After reading your tutorial I can only say one thing...WOW

I've never seen anyone with your talent.
Blocking in the excact outline of your figure (down the nipples and the wrinkles in the clothing!) already during the rough coloring of your image.
That's already extremly hard when you do this based on a rough outline/sketch, but you do it without the aid of anthing.

You also amaze me with the Depth of Field blurring your already create during the painting/coloring phase.
Something most people can only do after the finished coloring their image, by blurring what they created.

The way the bathroom-tiles in the background are blurred is completely photoreal, yet so subtle it would be impossible to paint for people without your skills...

Amazing work...keep it up...
