I would definitely say Giger. Also look at the surrealist artists like Dali and Magritte. Also have a look at Hieronymous Bosch. Heres one of his works: Hell http://www.artchive.com/artchive/b/bosch/delightr.jpg

Ivan Albright.

If you have a chance, go to the Art Institute of Chicago and see his work. He was a medical illustrator during the first World War and apparently saw some things he could not let go, which stuck with his work. He used combinations of very dark and very bright colors and when you see his paintings up close there is an almost psychotic attention to detail in them. You look at his paintings and get a feeling he was really disturbed by something and vented it with a paint brush. You can find pictures of his work online, but looking at even high res photos does them zero justice. The first time I saw his work was like 20 years ago and it made a huge impression on me. He clearly wasn't doing this work for anyone but himself, and you get the impression that he really needed to do it. His subject matter isn't gory, or shocking or full of meaningless symbolism, just disturbing when you try to envision the mindset of a person who paints the way he did.

dont click that link... or at least dont go throught the whole gallery umm.. why? I mean, sure, his work can be pretty macabre and grotesque.. but, at least I think, that it can be really beautiful and dreamy at the same time. His work is easily the most creative stuff I have ever seen :) I am aware though of the possible offending nature of the work though, and due to Cgtalk's policy on that sorta stuff, if a mod wants to delete that link, then thats cool :)

Do a google search for surrealism http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=surrealism

Of surrealist, Dali is probably most well known... http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=dali Dali hung out with a lot of artsy freinds and not so artsy friends and acted weird a lot... but I think that a lot of it was pretend craziness....

another slightly crazy artist that did less surreal stuff, but still was a little out there was Andy Warhol... that guy was a massive manic depressive that was in depressive mode a lot if you read a lot of his writings and interviews...

Hieronymus Bosch is one of the weirdest artists from the medieval days... his work is probably the first stuff that could officially be called surrealist painting even though he was painting for a reason - depicting hell...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=Bosch%2C+Hieronymus&btnG=Search

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/bosch/paradise/paradise.jpg

There's a lot of other weird stuff out there... MC Eschers stuff could even be considered weird though all he did was create illusions that would be impossible to exist in real life....

Holy cow... Just have to add that some of the artists linked in this thread... well... it's quite an eye-opener. I rarely do any general art browsing, but apparently I should have done that a long time ago. Some of this stuff is so incredibly great... I really have to start doing some REAL art, must become at least 3000 times better than I am... Concepts!

My sincere thanks to darktding for starting this thread, and to all those contributing links.

No prob ^_^ For obvious reasons, I have never found any photographers that share a similar style, but one person that comes close is Floria Sigismondi (http://www.floriasigismondi.com/) .. once again.. her work is pretty incredible :) Dave McKean (http://www.dreamline.nu/) also has some really georgous stuff.
I'll also second the Bosch and Goya suggestions!

Well, I don't want to divert what could be a very usefull thread for lots of people by getting into an art related argument (the Blue Pixel prooves that you'll never please everybody..) , so again.. if a mod wishes to delete the link due to potential offensive material, then there will be no argument from me :)

I haven't clicked the links in this thread cuz I'm at work now, but in the realm of comic book art I nominate Tim Vigil's work on Faust (graphic nudity, Satannic worship and blood galore) and Bill Sienkiewicz's (abstract and schizoid) work for Marvel Comics, especially New Mutants. Edward Gorey's Gashlycrumb Tinies is simply brilliant http://www.wishville.co.uk/gorey/.

not really disturbing but intersting to watch the phases of an lsd trip,of how they affect a persons capacity to draw/function.

Does anyone have a place to see the entire painting "Symbols inside the skull"
?

about Beksinski (http://www.beksinski.pl/) Absolutely incredible thank you so much for posting that darktding.

dreamscapes from the cell were pretty much the only reason to watch it :/
Is it just me or does Odd nernum seems to have a fixation on cocooned humans ?

lol this is wierd doesnt this guy : http://www.nerdrum.com/works/1994-1997/man_with_long.jpg

look allot like the guy from nickelback?

not trying to degrade his work its just an observation. Odd nernum is an incredibly talented individual.
