Ok. I didn't read rules. I was erased. I hope this time will be all correct.

I'm 3D modeler and texturer in the game industry. I have many nice pieces, but hovewer all are property of my former employers, Iliusion Softworks and Cauldron, local game developers. This one is my own, done in evenings and nights :)

Character has 3573 polygons and gun has 496.
It has one huge texture 1024x1024 and some smaller textures

I have sketches and other renders but rules allowes just one picture so here is ...

Hi Prasa :wavey: ,

looks great, could you post more from this one?
What about wireframe and texture file? :)

did you put anti aliasing?

Wiro

Looks badass! I really like those textures. The model looks very nice too. A thing which is admittadly a bit hard to see from this perspective, but it seems like the crotch is really low down so it looks like he's got short legs. Could you render out some more views? (and a wireframe shot?)

Wiro

Levius looks like Killer combined with Bodyguard, but he has kind heart :)
He shared me some space on his website, so I can post more pics

Thanks Levius!

HapZungLam > No. And Map Filtering I kicked off too ... I don'tlike too smoothy look of rendered lowpoly objects. :shame:

Wiro > hmmm .. I used some pictures of man as references when I modeled it .... may be this look of short legs is because of armor collar or armor of leg itself ... but may be you are right ... here is frontal view
http://www.3d.sk/prasa/Front.jpg

......... anyway Wiro, I love your high poly renders. You are one of the best! I hope I will be in high poly as good as you one time!

;)

Levius wants texture? Levius gets texture! :)

This pic is litle bit big, 250kb I think .... It is main texture. Originaly, I wanted all mesh textured with one map, but I was indolent and some parts as armor of legs and big shoulder shield has their own texture ..

What you need in your texture is more highlights and contrat , look at quake 3 textures man thats what its all about

prasa

The Magic Pen> No. I don't think so. Characters in Quake are like comix. I don't like that style. Of course, it's matter of taste. :)

Wiro

Hehe, thanks Prasa ;)

Yeah I think you're right, the legs look short because of the high collar. It's easier to see from the front.
I like your color scheme (the camo is really cool!). Is that texture the end resolution or do you resize it later? 1024 seems a bit hires, not?

Maybe you could break up the brushstrokes a bit with some grunge masks. Your photoshop brushes are quite visible as dots.

Keep it up!

isn't 1024 standard on ps2 and stuff now?

prasa

So Wiro, I'm in love with Pencil Brush in Photoshop. I like the purist way of work. Minimum instruments, maximum effect.
Look at Craig Mullins and you are stunned. Take a second look and you are stunned again because of his style of drawing. Simple daubs and dots. I tried to do it this way and I'm glad you noticed it :p

The resolution is of course too big for game now, but this character is not primary designated for game, it is my own presentation .... :) ... I think the reasonable resolution is 512x512 :) ... but I believe some games in progres today are using 1024x1024 ...

I'm quite into the dotty look of the texture. I think it lends a very distinctive style personally. :p

1024x1024 is actually no surprise this days.
some quake3 models had 1024x1024 body textures and 256x256 textures for the head.

about quake 3 being cartoonish, I actually don't belive so. the thing is that keneth scott had to give alot of contrast due to the lack of bumps and perpixel shading. so even projected shadows wore painted. Now, "id" is making doom3 and is using per pixel shading and normal maps, and dont even draw dark areas.
it kind of goes with the tech.
but your texture is quite good, real good in fact.
I just think that any heavy armor like that, just don't fit in the "infantry solier" concept. kind of makes hard for him to run. I mean, that's what it makes him look like.
But hey, remember Dune II, or Dune2000, the heavy soldier from harkonen? that's what this one would look like it the texture was red.

that's it!

Hey Prasa,,
Impressive work. Which 3d package you use?
why you changed the gun? that one on the sketch looks also great.

BTW: to all non-slovak users, prasa means 'pig' in english. coooool:buttrock:

I would like to see de details of his back. I want to see he in a cenario and i think the metal areas look more reflect, just this. Sorry my english

wyktor> I used Max 4.2 and Photoshop7 for texture and thanks for notification of meaning of my nick

Why I changed gun? Because of it's too gunshot like look. Character was sci fi and gun not.

Neox> 3573 poly is too much for you?? So, on my last occupation, in game developer Cauldron we usualy made characters up to 3000 polygons, of course we used LOD. It makes no sense to show 3000 polygons character in distance 200 meters. I think this is acceptable count. My soldier was first made for this limit , but I decided to attach some pipes on backtanks just for frippery :)
It took 866 polygons, pipes are always polygon-count killers :thumbsdow
You can see it on pics, it is also detail of back for banzato

Kazuya Mochu> Quake characters. Hmm... I really don't like them. Too many colors. But I think it correspond with extreme high game speed. It's like Tom&Jerry chasing games :)
I like much more CounterStrike. Characters models in FusionPack are excellent!
And damn with Harkonens! I thought I was original!:annoyed:

now i see were those polygons are :D

is it really neccesary to put so many details into that pipes? i believe some iterations less (for example in the inner radius of the curve) wold be much better for the polycount, and the thin pipes should not have more then 4 sides in my opinion, maybe on the ends to look round but on parts were you can't se how round they are, some smoothinggroups will there jobs ;)

and maybe you can kill some polygons on that thing on the arm, its has about 20 (??) sides, dont you think 10-15 will be okay enough? and you could collapse every 2nd edge on the upper face of that armthingie

sorry for my bad english :D

prasa
08-02-2002, 10:56 AM
OK, of course you are right. I reduced pipes and they have now 248 polygons, whole mesh 3109. My laziness turned out not to be very profesional :annoyed:

BTW, your dwarves are nice&funny

That is some very cool 3d. Reminds me of undergound sci-fi comics. The expensive ones with hard covers.

Prasa,

In quake3 I belive they used color as a way of identifycation. I agree with the cartoon look, it you look at them in the eviroment that they would be (in witch your character would fit in better). If you're in a grey place, shooting something gray... I mean... it would be hard to find him, probably making the game booring.
I think that's why they gave them some colorfull textures.

about Harkonen... they only have a similar concept... doesn't mean your's is like it! I mean its like a jetfighter from russia and one from america. Bothe diferent, but same concept!

any way... I do some low poligon modeling for games too, and belive me... your model is very, very good.

I really like the pipes, if you keep the details on them it makes a great difference compare to other games. The overal character is rock solid detail/design/implement

prasa
08-04-2002, 12:22 PM
Juzz> I never had money for expensive comics :thumbsdow
.... anyway, I like books much more ;)

yinako> thanks, I like pipes very much too. They are great because you completely feel the space when you look at them.

Kazuya Mochu> Quake is of course one of many ways. You can like this way, or you can't. Matter of taste nothig more.

About Harkonen. I designed this soldier like heavy armored desert warrior. And of course I don't live on another planet, I'm not without influences. But I hope it isn't simply copy of something else.

For what game you are working on? If it is not a secret

BTW, if you all want to see some of my others low poly characters, they are in WIP section, here is link

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=16047

I'm looking for some advices in freelance job searching so they are welcome too

KazuyaMochu
08-04-2002, 11:57 PM
Yeah, harkonen kind of pop's out on your mind if you we go to "desert heavy warrior".

About me working on a game, it is true, but the team is not professional! It's somthing I really love to do and I usually see alot of work from pros. I mean, your's definitlly pro!

And yes, i do like quake3 (models, not game... kind of "nothing new")
I also like the model on Black and White. very pure, very lowpoly and rich.

About freelancing... I mean... I wish I new! I'd like to go pro, you know... living out of it! (dreaming)

but about your model... There's not much to say. I mean, you've done it all. Great look and fell to it, and optimization.
no bad notes from me.
oh! is there going to be a color variation? like on... diferent armys?

any way: Cheer, great work!

prasa

Thx ... now I don't propose to do something with this soldier ... I started making on my first high poly character

.. and good luck on way to the industry! .. but don't forget this ... It's primarily job, not fun ...

Hey Juzz! You Juzzart link doesn't work properly. You entered wrong link, change it! .. anyway, your lowpoly characters are lovely! I like Bigginsguy texture .. but not face ... face needs more saturation and contrast! ..;)

Juzz
08-07-2002, 09:35 AM
Yeah, I have redone the face. It is still not finished (th new texture) but almost. I could post the textures of the guy up here. That I'll do.

P.S. the link to my website has been fixed. The site is VERY old and unupdated, but I'm gonna do a big gallery update soon. As soon as the BMW is done.

Good Work! I'm Astonished!

But I'm wondering what is the pipes and the backpack for? I mean: it is some kind of air supply or a jetpack?... Or even fuel for that gun?

(it could be used like a flame-thrower or something -- I don't know, I'm not a desert alien :p )

:buttrock:

prasa
08-09-2002, 12:09 PM
Thanks! :)

GothMog> I don't know too .... I'm sure it's not a jetpack .... I think it's one tank for Oxygene and one for some fuel or cooling liquid .. and I'm not a desert alien too ;)
