View Full Version : Please Help! Need help compressing file for 10second club
Tom N. 07-27-2004, 08:39 PM Ok this probably sounds dumb to people who know what they're doing but I'm having trouble getting my 10 second club animation file to under 1.8 Mb. The smallest I can get it using Cleaner is 2.5 Mb.
We also have After Effects, Premiere, and Combustion at my school as well (although I've never used combustion) Is there anyone who can help me out and tell me what compression types to use in any of these programs that will give me an MPEG-1 compression and a small file size too?
Any advice or a point in the right direction would really be appreciated.

Well, there is this answer from the 10 Second Club FAQ... http://www.10secondclub.net/faq.php?id=10009
Remember, the only compression type accepted by the club is MPEG-1 which should result in .mpg files. After Effects and Combustion don't export MPEG-1 files, but you could render out the frames and re-assemble them into a MPEG-1 file using TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/). There is a bbMPEG (http://members.cox.net/beyeler/bbmpeg.html) plugin for Premiere that will allow you to output MPEG-1 files. Cleaner should be able to create smaller MPEG-1 files, so what settings are you using in Cleaner?

Hey thanks for the reply - I downloaded TMPGenc and it worked pretty good, got it down to 1.7 Mb. In Cleaner I was using the wizard and following these steps:
CD-ROM --> Highend / Midrange (both checked) --> DVD-ROM --> MPEG
When I chose any other settings it would have MPEG greyed out so that I couldn't choose it. I've never had any training in Cleaner so I don't really know what I'm doing.. I just know we have it here and that it was good for compressing files (right?). So if you feel like explaining what I did wrong then I'd be happy to learn, but since TMPG worked for me I won't ask to you sit there and explain everything if you don't want to.
Thank you for the links though!

P.S. and yeah, I should read the FAQ next time.. doh

Cool, I'm glad that TMPGenc worked for you.
Hmmm, the Cleaner settings wizard... You actually want to skip the wizard and go for the "advanced settings..." button at the bottom of the window. The left pane should update and display a list of output options. Expand the MPEG options by clicking on the triangle next to MPEG on the list. A list of suboptions should be displayed, including Video CD, web, and DVD. Select "MPEG-1 web" (NTSC or PAL, it doesn't matter because you'll be changing the fps setting). Now, tweak the settings so they match the following:
Output: MPEG-1 System Stream
Tracks: Include video, Include audio
Image: Manual crop, Image size 320x240, Fast scaling, Noise reduce, Display ratio 1
Adjust:
Encode: Basic MPEG, 30 fps, Slower (higher quality), GOP size 15, P-Frame distance 5, Open GOPs, 1.1 Mbits/s video
Audio: MPEG Layer-2, 192.0 kbits/s, 16-bit stereo samples at 44.100 kHz
If your animation isn't 30 fps, adjust the fps above to match. I may have left out something in the settings, so when in doubt, take a look at Bruce Creevey's TMPGenc settings file (http://10secondclub.org/files/models/10SecondClub.mcf). You can actually save this Cleaner setting as "10SecClubMPEG" before you click on the "Apply" button, so you can re-use the setting in the future. Your school may frown upon custom Cleaner settings, but it's worth a try at least.
If anybody has better Cleaner settings, please let me know. I'm always interested in learning how to do things better!

Thanks! Like I said, I've never used or been trained in Cleaner so I used the Wizard since its the first thing I stumbled upon. Thanks for the settings I'll give em a try for next time
