i'm thinking of learning maya and wondered if it has GI and area lights in its own renderer.

GI: not natively, but you can fake it, go to www.highend3d.com (http://www.highend3d.com) and search for GI scripts.
area lights: yes.

what standalone renderers are there. MR? Renderman? any others?
MR, renderman, entropy, BMRT
maybe more?
