hello, I renderd the following image on my p3 700 with 3d virtualight. I did a little afterwork in Photoshop rendertime was about 3 hours @ 2048*1536

hires version can be found here (http://www.dotblend.com/_images/BIG/xwing_composite.jpg)

what do you think? like it?

looks great, but in the high res, your shadows shouldnt have such defined edges. (the light passing through the colored LEGO pieces would not be the same exact size, edges and all, when it hits the table top as the pieces themselves.)

i know, but i will re-render this image with different lights... nou i used omni's i will use spots instead the next time.

there is no radiosity in these images!

it's just a matter of placing the right lights at the right place

and the rendering software i use is also available for maya!

it's calles MVL check www.3dvirtualight.com

and I updated the images at my gallery
(there is no flash intro) no creepy code

I think the model looks werry good and interesting.. but IMO you should use just one shadow.. Looks more convinsing that way.

getting closer  man, i wish i had some sort of constructive comment other than "keep working on it" but the shadows still do not look quite correct to me, and i have no clue how you could make them look better really :hmm:

anyone else some suggestions about how to make the shadows better? or maybe something else?

Hey buddy! Good to see you here as well!

As far as the shadow goes, I think the latest one looks pretty good. Not too crisp and not too faded either. Maybe a little bit darker shadow, but that is it.

Nice work, as always dotblend.

next morning.... still rendering... this time i thought to do a "IBI" render... it's already rendering for about 10.21 hours...

IBI render
(image based illumination)
the insult of 12 hours rendering....
damn i hate this when it happens!

that one looks good, but you lost your color :hmm:

On the lighting:

Instead of using IBI try using a dome of lights to fake GI. When you hit a certain threshold number, the results are indistinguishable from HDRI (with a little adjustment =) and the render times are a lot nicer

i dont need to fake gi
i can use gi... a really fast one!
when i render with a dome of lights it renders slower...
when i render with a dome that has a image on it for illumination (ibi) it goes way faster!

Hey Neil, find something more constructive to do with your time. :wip:

I'm diggin' the lighting on this render. I too wish Maya would comeout with something comparable to Final Render(with it's speed). You are getting closer and closer, and I think if you played around with some fill lights and some ambient lights, it might do the trick.

How is my critique not constructive? I said the same thing you did, but merely did it visually instead of typing it, we are graphic artists, aren't we?

yes indeed "graphic" artists
