hey all,
Im trying to work on creating a fairly realistic desert terrain and have some questions on how to do this.
I have a descent terrain shape and an ok shader for ground. But I want to add in some folliage/rocks/etc. I have messed with ideas of particle instancing paint effects groups to some surface emmitted particles on the terrain but it is yielding two things that arent working for me.

1. I cant get a randomization to the size/rotation/look of the folliage instances.
2. It takes to stinking long to render.

I was also thinking of using the randomPaint option in paint effects but it is kinda crashing maya when it wants to paint as many bushes and trees that I need for the look I want.

Ive also tried using planes with photos with masks of bushes. But I am limited to camera movements because the bushes have to stay facing towards the camera/ and they look kinda well (like planes with bush pics on them).

So any help here would be awesome. any ideas with Paint effects, particles, other folliage generators, pluggins, scripts

Thanks for your help
-Brad

in the instancer window

i think you write rotPP = rand (0,360) or something like that...but then in the rotation value dropdown at the top, you change that to expression or something...sorry cant be more helpful not infront of maya at the moment.

check out highend there is a paintfx optimization area....must read...also duncan brimsmead the guy at Alias that is 'the' paintfx guy, is here at CGtalk, ask him what needs to be done, if all else fails.

don't forget to watch Mummy Returns, in the desert....with foliage...paintFX coconuts. :)
