View Full Version : Cloth In Max??
distortedrealty 07-31-2002, 02:44 AM Hey guys,
I'm currently working on a short, actually just started, but i already ran into a problem. I was wondering if there was a way i can simulate thick cloth in 3ds max. I've used "stich" before but it seems that all it deals with is very thin cloth. I was planning on having a character with a sweater on which would be thick cloth, but i have no idea how to go about it.
Any ideas on how i can do this??

are you talking about the movement looking like the cloth is thin? Or do you mean you want to give your cloth some physical thickness? If you are talking about the movement, that should be adjustable in the settings. For example, with simcloth, the higher the bond range setting the more the indiviual vertices try & stay relative to each other. Which means the cloth is less bendable & looks thicker... however if you actually want to give the mesh physical thickness, I would apply a solidify modifier after my clothsim on the stack. :)
I'd investigate simcloth, its a free cloth simulator by the chaos group.

"I would apply a solidify modifier after my clothsim on the stack"
isn't it the other way around, first solidify, then cloth?
i mean, if you add the solidify after the simcloth, you'll have intersections everywhere with the body, because it's not calculated with the simcloth mod.
right?

Wrong. I think you're miss-understanding how the modifier stack (or the solidify modifier) works.
Solidify just adds a little bit of thickness to your cloth (or to any mesh for that matter). As the mesh is already animated that thickness will remain constant no matter what the cloth mesh does (which is exactly what you want).
If you put it before Simcloth you'll have to calculate a solution with more than twice as many verts, and with the added complication of the "front" and "back" of the cloth intersecting each other.

that's right, never thought about the front and back intersecting each other.

ok, now..
I did what you guys told and, you were right about applying solidify after simcloth.BUT here's my other question. If i put a negative number in the solidify modifier will i get intersections between my character and the cloth??
To me it seems to look better than putting a positive number because the shirt would look a bit weird and oversized.. :)
thanks

Well why don't you try it and see? It can't take much more than a second to change a value in the solidify modifier (wheras it must have taken at least a minute to post the question here).
If looks better with a positive value use a positive value, and if it looks better with a negative value use a negative value. Simple.

Well i did try it before i asked, but i should have made the question more clear. i wanted to know if there would be intersection if i animated the character. But thanks for the reply. I tested out some stuff and i found it out.
Now im gonna go back to modeling my character:)
