at what point does one realize the need for opengl (quadro) over D3D (radeon)?

i have a fx 500, now on ebay :) and all of my games blow ass, and the only thing that runs well is wings3d. when wings was running i loved it, damn near impossible to slow it down in my normal modelling routine. max on the other hand, with the same model, would be very slow. I have a suspicion it's the card.

anyhow, i was wondering how often you reach into the realms where opengl really shines? i consider myself to be a serious cg guy, but i am not too sure if and when i actually fully utilize opengl.

so i am at a dillema, should i stick with the quadros and get a 1000/1100 or say screw it and go with a radeon 9800? anyone have good times with a radeon and max? does the radeon even have opengl support or purely d3d?

thanks

Of course the number one gaming card has OpenGl support! A 9800 can be sotware modded into a FireGl X2 , go for it, it'll be a great card, decent price. Better of going for a card that can be soft modded to a Workstation card then to spend the big bucks to get a mediocre Workstation card, believe me. As for Wings running so well compared to Max I can't say exactly why that would be, but I believe that Wings doesn't even use OpenGl at all, it is all software rendering.

Sidenote: Wings3D does indeed use OGL.

Sorry for the misinformation.

ATI will have a completely rewritten OpenGL driver sometime next year. the reason they are doing that is because... well... their current one sucks. With the Quadro- were you using the MAXtreme drivers? If not, you should be.

even with the soft mod for the ati... dont expect any stability.. I tried the mod on my 9800 pro.. and it didnt help much.
