View Full Version : Ambient pass
Spacelord 07-24-2004, 02:01 PM Okay I've tried the default Ambient pass in XSI4.0 and I don't seem to be getting it to work.
Well everything turns out black, what am I missing ?
I've set up a simple scene with a sphere and grid, noicon texture on the sphere and a grey phong on the grid. One spot light.

just create a new pass , create a override , override the specular highlights and disable them. turn off shadows and there you go , your very own ambient\diffuse pass :)

There's something really fishing going on with over-rides in 4.0. I was just playing with the ambient preset, and first the over-ride locks all kinds of things on the material not related to the over-ride, and if you apply another material to the object, it acts like the over-ride doesn't effect it... but if you copy the override - it refreshes and starts acting on the object (and locking everything...)
Very strange.

yeah i'm getting some weird things too, like I was trying to add an override and it wouldn't appear.
The I Close explorer, opened explorer and I had add about ten of them.

If you're applying over-rides to partitions, make sure you're looking at the current pass - other wise you won't see them. In fact, I'd recommend you only ever try to work with the current pass, even though the explorer will let you expand the other passes. I've had crashes when opening partitions on non-current passes.

Yeah, Ive heard about some weird things for over rides, and I kow they changed them for a reason, but I cant remember where the docs for it are. I guess check the manual, should be in there some where if I saw it some where else.

Hi,
I was just about to post a question on this exact matter. I've been getting this behaviour on material over-rides in passes, and was really scratching my head at how they now behave. I was starting to wonder if I was doing something wrong, kinda glad to hear others have encountered this.
I'm using 4 Edu version.
