Hello!, first a little explanation:

This soldier is from and old japanese anime movie with the same name (Jin Roh: Wolf Brigade working title, I think), I liked a lot the character and the expression,( in the movie it's some kind of elite japanese police, to be brief) so I tried as a practice to turn it into 3D, hope you like it.

I did the character very fast, some things were changed, others were not, and I end just creating a quick enviroment.
Max 6, PS7, and VRAY were used!

Truly excellent stuff!
Looks exactly like the wolf brigade soldiers - even the grimy sewer background is authentic!
Can you post some wires to prove that its 3d? it looks a lot like a 2d painting.
If it is full 3d - then outstanding work!

Id like to see a render that emulates the poster art with the soldier standing with the moon in the background - i love that poster.

EDIT - Ive just taken a look at your site - really impressive work - do you apply a filter to the renders afterwards? Ive noticed the haind painted look on 1 or 2 other renders.

Impressive work. Very true to the original. Did you render then touch up after with photoshop, or were the textures painted in PS first then rendered?

Really kinky shader. I was looking for a render after seeing your 2D design, but that seems to be the render itself ? Would be quite impressive. same comment on the Batman on your website.

That's a very nice pic, definitely looks drawn. Could we have another angle just to see the how it all fits and a wireframe view that would be cool to see how you put it all together? The helmet looks a lot like the helmets in the upcoming PS2 game Killzone in fact the armour style is very similar.

Also, I'm an incredible fan of Jin-Roh! It is THE animated feature film of all time...

About PS, I like to edit the render after it comes out from max, not paint over it but playing with the tones, it's mostly because it would be real slow to render it again and again if the colours didn't match exactly how you want them to look, (the water was a mix of vray- refraction/reflexion so it was a lot of render time), except from the color correction, textures were painted, rendered as usual and the retouched again in ps, It's all 3d

Awesome figure and scene, I agree it does look very painted rather than 3d. Excellent modeling of a very cool figure. Now that firelode mentions it, I noticed that the creators of Killzone probably took a lot of inspiration from this figure, especially the helmet/mask. Very good modeling and render, and I also like the dragon and tank on your site, I don't like the batman but that's because I just don't like batman, the picture is fine.

this is really nice work. it's been said already, but this doesn't look 3d at all. it looks like a painting. the only thing i don't like is the bottom right edge of the wall. it's lumpy, wheras a real sewer would not have such molded walls. that being said, i have not seen the anime, so this may be the style that the anime is in. if so, i eat my words.

congratulations on a render well done!

This is so awesome, cool figure, great scene, awesome render (but not a hint of 3d in it) and the best texturing! Anychance that we could see a whiteplaster render, too see the scene lit by vray but clean of textures and all?

Cool. It might make a good animation. The only thing that bothers me in the first pic is that the character seems to be standing on the water as opposed to "in" it. Granted, it is shallow, but it still loks a bit off. Otherwise, it's perfect.

My question though, may come out as a little bit "off base".

Parts of the background in the wire looks like perhaps you applied meshsmooth followed my optimize. Wondering why the optimize? If for rendering time, did it make that much of a difference? If for another reason, I was wondering why? Also, someone asked for a non textured version, I'd love to see another wire, but pre-optimized... just to see. :) I know you said the env was just a quicky, but I'd love to see it.

Oh ya, I agree about the standing on the water comment instead of "in" it. I didn't realize it was water before the OP said so.

Oh, one other thing...

The bullets don't seem to be heavy enough in the pic. The bend at the bottom seems to be what cloth in the wind would do, not a bunch of metal stuck together. Wouldn't gravity pull them down a bit more?... But someone will probably post a pick and prove me wrong. ;)

There is just something in the face expression, i think it should look somehow meaner, like more hellish and angry, but dunno, there are so many different illustrations. Again nice work.

I have learnt a lot reading render comments, so I think It'll be fair to answer as much as I can:

About the sewers "water" effect, It's supposed to be about 2 inches deep, no more, I tried to exaggerate it in previous tests so it would look like water with little waves or ripples, but it became too simple and plain, and didn't fit the rest of the render, so I textured it more and added detail, maybe killing the water effect but I liked more that way.

The background, I modelled it low poly, meshsmooth, then collapsed, with edit poly/soft selection made it look somewhat irregular, but obviously with the mesh collapsed there were a lot of polys, so I just optimize it and then textured it. (so there's not shot of before)

The bullets are really heavy, I thought that the curve of the "wind effect" would be just too much for the weight, but then I guessed the character was turning (not really fast but well, not that slow), so inertia might work that way, and the bullets were just shaking or moving, (and by the way, it gives more life to a somehow static stance) so that was enough for me.

The white non-textured render, here it is,

The model was really simple in the anime, so I just tried to make the mesh very clean using only quads, lighting was not something to abuse so the vray setup was simple, I put an "vraylight" (that keeps the grainy GI look with soft dark green/brown shadows), and some standard max omnis with almost same colours and low multiplier to add specular, keep the shading continuous and fill the dark places, then low multiplier GI (0,2 I think).

I hope that answers most of the questions, thanks for the replies!

Edit: (Someone told me about the triangulation in the wires, it's because there are some "editable poly" and some "editable mesh" objects, and i forgot to turn off display "triangle edges" in the Direct3D max driver making the last ones look triangled when not selected in the viewport... blame me)

"JIn Roh" is One of my all time favorite animae classics

I also have a 3D rig of that character that was given away

Very Impressive!

I started modeling Jin-Roh long ago. Maybe ill pick it up. your texturing is superb. the modeling is quite good as well, Very very cool. My small crit, Though it is very small and most would not even notice is that the helmet seems slightly to rounded. it could just be me. but thats the feeling I get.

anyway, Its very very well done. and may even inspire me to do some more modeling!

I love your visual style. It feels a lot gouche paint....very flat, with a rough texture. I feel that look also gives the image that "grit" too.....nice work.
