Hi!
I have been trying to export a model from Maya into 3Dmax, I have exported the model from Maya into a .obj file (object file) but I can't open it in 3Dmax... like 3Dmax haven't got support for this file! I read somewhere that this is the trick if you want to export it but still can't open it in 3dmax.

Or is there a Maya -> 3dMax plugin somewhere? or a plugin for 3dMax that import maya files/obj file?

3ds max can't open .obj files as standard, but there is a free plug-in for this on the net somwhere. Sorry it's been a while since I've needed this, so I can't remember the name or where to get it.

Hy Skink, try to use the FBX Format, it's free and very very usefull. Since it's a brandnew format it supports also special data to convert with that major packages all support.

I advice you not to use the OBJ format, 1. Object format ist ONLY Geometry (with possibility of a small range of material abilities tough) 2. OBJ tesselates! if you're exporting into OBJ format, all meshes will become triangulated.

I was using for this task Deep Exploration with the Max-Dcom Plugin for long Time, but the new FBX Format has convinced me and I'm now using this.
Great Work by Kaydara....

hope that helps ;)

btw, the Max-PLugin you search is called OBJ2MAX

There's a plug-in for Max on Alias.com to import to Maya there was another site for Maya to Max but I can't remember the site for it, you may want to google search for Max plugins related to Maya

Habware make a max obj importer and exporter. I think there's one or two others around too. This is the link to the V6 one, but they go back several versions on that site.

And obj doesn't always triangulate the mesh. These exporters and importers (if they're the ones I've got) can keep quads or polygons just fine. Don't know about the Maya exporter though.

One thing to bear in mind is that you have to set the number of digits setting higher than one or it reduces the accuracy of the UVs when exporting. (This is a common problem when exporting from max to zbrush2).

FBX is probably better though as it supports bones.
