View Full Version : Anyone using MR for Maya LEGITIMATELY in XP?
DesignDawg 07-30-2002, 05:19 PM Hey all,
MR for Maya has been a bit of a pain for me ever since we purchased it. It took me about a week to get the licensing to actually work on Win2000. I had high hopes that, since I now have a 100% working key, I wouldn't have trouble with a new install. Well, I went with XP, and I just can't get the stupid license to install. SO, I was wondering if anyone here has a legit copy of MR for Maya running on a legit license with the SPM license server under XP? The reason legit is so important is because, if you have a cracked version (if there even are any), you probably have the licensing bypassed somehow, and that doesn't answer my question really.
Thanks,
Ricky

The licensing tools in mental ray for Maya 1.0 require a
C:\WINNT directory (which is the case on Windows 2000).
On Windows XP, this directory isn't created, because Windows
is now installed to C:\Windows.
To fix your setup, create a C:\WINNT directory before you
install the software and this should get you up and running.
Hope this helps.

Farhez,
Wow. THANK YOU so much! I was beyond worried about this. Who could've known it could be so simple! BTW, when I was re-installing, I noticed one of the images on the installer is yours? Nice. Thanks again.

Oh, by the way,
Even after I had created the folder, it still didn't work. I had to manually tell it what COM port to use in the config file. After it had successfully installed the license, I still couldn't get SPM to start up. After reading the log file, I realized it was because spmd couldn't FIND my license file. So, once again, I had to manually edit the path to the license file (the entire Windows path).. And it works like a champ now! Thanks again, Farhez.

with spm license server
but in your case, edit the path for the: "spm-kf" file in the spm-config.
my problem is:
spmd doesn't want to start properly but my problem is more the service has a special tcp problem, i don't know why yet.
it always prompts in the logfile:
Jan/07/05 00:37:12 NOTICE: SPMD "C:\WINDOWS\System32\spm\spmd.exe (Ver.1.1.11 [Build 1242])" started on "chimera" (Windows NT 5.1 [2600])
Jan/07/05 00:37:13 ALERT: SPM_FATAL ERROR (C:\WINDOWS\System32\spm\spmd.exe) : mi-spm11/tcp and mi-spm/tcp: unknown services
Jan/07/05 00:37:13 CRITICAL: fatal error: "mi-spm11/tcp and mi-spm/tcp: unknown services".
Jan/07/05 00:37:17 ERROR: SPMD "C:\WINDOWS\System32\spm\spmd.exe (Ver.1.1.11 [Build 1242])" terminated.
nobody really had a solution to this, i googled the whole www after it...
no useful results.
