View Full Version : Self Portrait - Shave and a Haircut Style
Jaidek 07-30-2002, 03:43 PM Hi All,
Been a while since I posted anything, been busy lately! Well, here is my latest piece (well at least 22 years old) :D . I have been participating in the beta testing for Shave and a Haircut for Maya (www.joealter.com) and decided to put the program through its paces. This program is kickin'. Everything was done in Maya and the hair done with Shave. DOF done in post. Let me know what you think!

Hey Pachy,
Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate them! I had fixed the ear in later versions but you can't see much of the ear in the final shot. The two pictues below are my work in progress images, just showing different shots of the hair. Those are older and not the final model or textures.

The hair looks great, Just a note about the eyes, they don't seem to be flush up with the inside of the eyelid, like they are set back a bit? Perhaps some sort of expression on the face might add to it a bit, looks a touch like a manequin.

Thanks Navel Lint! :D I realize that there is very little expression on the face, this is something that I have yet to do (facial blends and setup). Hopefully I will get to that soon, as I have other projects to work on now. Thought that it was a good stopping point and posted. Keep the comments coming!:bounce:

The ears are a bit sharp, but that is totally a nitpick. That shave and haircut is awesome. It's great to see tools for hair being developed that are that excellent. I like the model too.

Hey lowdown,
Thanks for the critique! Yeah, Shave is great! By far the best hair system I have ever used. And soon it is going to be everywhere. It is already the core of XSI hair, available for Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Maya (beta) and soon MAX. It has been a blast participation on the beta and the final product should be shipping soon.

How long does it take to render the hair?
is it faster then shag hair render in Max?
looks good :)

Your character is very cool. Good modeling (apart the ears) and lighting. The hairs are more realistic, but I dont' knew tha shave and haircut for Max.Great news. I can't wait ..........................................

Hmmm.... a few crits:
- the beard seems a bit too...ummm.... furry. In my experience ( ;) ), men's beards tend to be much more wiry, and coarse. This beard looks too much like matted fur  Of course, this can differ depending on how old the guy is, and how long he has been shaving for... But then again, if your beard is this thick, then it would stand to reason that it needs to be far coarser.
- the hairline. This is something that bothers me about hair plugins - the hairline never looks right. Surely your hairline isn't so perfectly straight?

Oren Ben-Tov: For this particular scene it took approximately 20 minutes to do the Shave hair pass (this was done on a dual AMD MP2100, but Shave currently only renders on one thread). It all depends on the ammount of hair in the scene. In this scene I have a total of 10 layers each with 5,000-10,000 hairs. I haven't used Shag hair before so I am not sure which is faster.
Leigh: Thanks for the crtis! =) As for the beard, I agree it could be a bit more coarse, when I address the other issues I will see what can be done here. Same with the hair line, this shouldn't be much of an issue as the hair growth and density is controlled by an alpha map. Just have to make it a little more irregular.
Thanks again for the comments, hopefully I will be able to make some adjustments and post an update soon.

That's so cool that you can use an alpha map to control the hairline! Looking forward to an update! :D
