window-settings preferences-colors-3d views
but it's not always good the black one. if you work with curves or so it's bad. unless you change the colors for these things too.

i guess you will have to change nearly all of the colors in maya if you want a black background..

im not to found of total black eighter, and if you make tutorial videos stay away from black backgrounds.
.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't really like a total black as a background color, or as any other -color either (Well, text maybe), it kinda reminds me of night, at night it's no light so everything is hidden in the dark, so with i.e. totally black background, my brains think like there could be something in the background that I'm just missing as "there's no light"...
Ok, it's propably just me ;)

How do you change the general color of the interface? The frame colors, all of the data that creates the general look. My SGI's is this HIDEOUS green that I can't stand.. I can't figure out how to change it though. I've changed everything else, no control is found however.

You have to change the theme's properties and that's handled by the window manager, don't know exactly where to find it ... , don't have access to SGIs anymore ...
I'm sure you know, so I have no idea why I'm writing this ... :p

I think Tidus is asking the same thing, how to change Win2000s interface ... , if so, Tidus, that's done from Control Panel->Display, or right click on the desktop and Properties->Appearance and Background tabs.
why do I have the feeling I don't need to post this ???... :hmm:

if that's any help i've packaged a little script some time ago to cycle through dark/middle/bright backgrounds with a hotkey
and a little one to toggle the ui elements
both available on highend3d named GOAToggleViewportColor and GOAToggleFullScreen
