what would u guys recommend i ( a total n00b to 3d ) should learn to model people with. the book i have now uses nurbs, but a lot of u guys use polygons and it looks a lot nicer.
thx in advance,

polygons are easier to use i feel
nurbs seem to me alot harder, and are much more mathematical.
ill list the differences for you or pro's and cons have you.
Ok now for nurbs.
nurbs have set in UV's. Which makes them harder to texture, or easier to texture, i look at it as harder.
nurbs work much better with fur, and most of maya's paint tools.
if you're gonna be using dynamics and paint effects you gotta use nurbs, this is due to the fixed in surface points / uv's.
nurbs are much smoother for less geomety, plus you can localy subdived in armpits, knees etc with a much less penelty to your poly count. (nurbs turn to poly's when you render btw)

Polygons.
You can edit the uv's.
cloth.
easier to use, but end up getting hella heavy compared to nurbs.
you can just pull points/extrude to your hearts content and not have to worry about your next move so much as nurbs.

So man id say they are both kick ass and you need to learn both.
i suggest starting with polygons.

hmm man i dunno if all i said is 100 percent accurate. I just said what ive noticed from practically being self taught so dont hold it against me if i screwed up guys... :)

hope this helps.

I agree with Rudity.

In more that polygon is easy to model, you can convert your poly model to subdiv, and be able to modify you subdiv model with poly subdivisions.

So If you want to stay on Maya, I definitely advise to you to start with polygon.

I was just thinking this very same question when n00b, and I must say that start with polygons!! When you understand polygon modeling, investigate on NURBS, and try to understand what NURBS are and what they are good for, my problem was that I really didn't know what NURBS were, just heard they were "good", so I was very frustrated when I couldn't do everything with NURBS, then I switched to polygons and now I understand what those two are good for, and can now pick the right one for the right task.

So start with polygons.
