Thought I'd do a quick post to jump in before anyone else takes this idea.
I'm gonna be doing a british bulldog sergeant from the period of the peninsular war.
some concepts will follow in the next couple-a-days

Yay! Someone did a British soldier as a Bulldog! Perfect! I think there's at least one entry of a german as a Bulldog, which is just wrong. Good luck, you've got a good start here, now lay down some polys!!

funkyrayuk
07-21-2004, 01:44 PM
ok, here's the start of the head. it's about 368 polys- i'm aiming for about 500 so there's still some more tweaking and adding to do.
let me know what u think people.
thnx for the comment dargon!

some more adjustments and additions, i've changed my target count for the head to about 700 cos i can afford to, at the mo he's at 640, crits anyone?http://freespace.virgin.net/r.dauncey/bully_progress03.jpg

funkyrayuk
07-23-2004, 07:11 PM
today i've been working on the torso. i'm at over 2600 tris at the mo which is too much, the feet need some attention and i need to cut down the tri count.
Also, can anyone suggest to me what i should do about the two belts, i think it may be better to do them in the texture cos i'm getting problems where the rucksack is and i can't really fix it unless i add yet more polys.http://freespace.virgin.net/r.dauncey/bully_progress04.jpg

funkyrayuk
07-25-2004, 03:01 AM
just a quick update! the tri count is at 2910 so i've got just under 600 to play with for the rifle and a couple of other bits.

opinions? crits? anything?

c'mon guys, i need some opinions and crits - do i smell or something?

AndyH
07-26-2004, 11:09 AM
Its coming on well - just loosen him up a bit - he looks well stiff at the moment. Maybe even over emphasise bits on him like his hands or his chest to give him more character. He kinda looks like one of those kubrick things or a lego man at the mo.
Think of the bulldog from tom & jerry or in a more extreme case, look at the bison that ehulser is doing for this comp - it has a much looser and natural form.
Get your edge loops / Hard edges defined too - that will help.

As for the smell comment? i dunno - i cant smell as far as bournemouth :scream:
Maybe with my smell-o-scope.....

thanks for the crit andy. i'm still kinda new to 3d, what do u mean by edge loops/hard edges?

AndyH
07-26-2004, 12:32 PM
sorry - i meant smoothing groups, not edge loops.
What i mean by that is making certain edges of your model hard / sharp so that you dont get a smooth result.
Dunno what software youre using, but it should be pretty easy to figure out how to do this by looking in the manual / help file

funkyrayuk
07-26-2004, 01:30 PM
ok, yeh i know how to do that!thanks again

looking good man, do us Brits proud !

funkyrayuk

here's the nearly finished model, i've bowed out his legs and arms to give him a more dog-like stature. tri count is 3498, i just need to had a feather to his hat so i'll put 1 more poly there.

AndyH
07-27-2004, 03:43 PM
The construction / polycount of that white sash thing on his torso will make rigging a living hell!
Nice head, but i think the body still needs more work.

funkyrayuk
07-27-2004, 11:17 PM
do u think i should ditched the two belts and include them in the texture map then? i'll see what i can do about the body, looking at it now the legs make him look a bit like he's trying to have a poo!

funkyrayuk
07-29-2004, 11:17 AM
he's down to 3434 tris now. I've made some slight changes, he's now wider, the shoulder pad things have been changed and the chest has been brought out to give him a more dog-like appearance, what do u think?
i'm still not sure what to do about the two belts, if i don't get a response i'll just incorporate it into the texture.

I agree with andy, his body could use a far more natural form. Btw what has happened to his knees?

funkyrayuk
07-30-2004, 05:53 PM
ok, i've changed the mesh on his chest and altered his legs, bear in mind that he's supposed to be standing to attention so his posture shouldn't be relaxed.

AndyH

The upper body and arms look loads better - i think all you need to do now is bring the knees in a bit, and youre done. His legs look broken at the moment.

Nice work this far.
Why dont you just make I quick try with the texture, and see if it works to paint the white belts. It prbably will.
: )

funkyrayuk
08-04-2004, 01:03 AM
Andy- i've brought the knees it a bit now, i can kinda see what u mean about the broken legs

isabelle- thanks for the advice, i'll give the belt a try on the texture map.

thanks for the comments guys, i should hopefully have the begginnings of a texture up in the next couple of days.

On the next comp i'll need some good advise 2.

thanks dacheese and aryes.

ok, i've uv mapped his body now (i'm gonna do 1 for the body and 1 for the accessories and weapons) this is my first real attempt and texturing something so any advice and crits would be great.
here's the start of my texturing! i know the creases on the torso look crap at the mo but i'm still experimenting.

AndyH

Good start considering its your first real attempt at texturing.
If i could give some tips, its that you should tone down the cloth wrinkles, and add more colour into the shadows rather than black. Also, work on the head texture some more - add variations of hair and colour. He looks kinda like a teddy bear right now. Do a google image search for bulldog and use the reference.
Keep it up lad!

Bulldogs have short hair so you would be better off going for a "stubbley hair" look, rather than the "wavey fur" look. Try laying down a solid color layer and then using another layer set to overlay or soft light to add some suggestions of stubble texture and short hair strokes. Then a third layer could be used to develop the soft highlights, wrinkles and shadows to give some volume to the folds of skin on his face. Just a suggestion ;) Keep up the good work.

done a bit more shading and altered the texruring on his face.

Do you have a uv-snapshot?

I think that in texturing, the uvlayout is one of the most important things. And its always interestring to see.

: )

funkyrayuk
08-11-2004, 11:37 AM
sure thing, here's the uv layout, it's just missing the teeth plane which i'll add in later.

Intresting layout for the head and the torso - very good! No distortion or seams.

funkyrayuk
08-12-2004, 06:02 PM
thanks andy. there's still a couple of problem areas i'm struggling with. in particular the upper chest as u can see from my latest update. any crits?

very ql texture, good details

AndyH

Looking much better.
I should make the white areas a bit yellowish - just something other than perfect white - it looks too white if you know what i mean.
Also make his nails less luminous, and try and improve the face map / UVs - it seems a little blurry.
The posture is much better - especially on the shoulders on the side view.

funkyrayuk
08-17-2004, 12:57 PM
here's yet another update. i think the rucksack is coming along nicely, the ends of the sleeping bag are prooving to be somewhat of a problem, i may have to go back in and change the uv layout.

nearly finished now, i've sorted out the uv's on the face and shifted some about on the chest so i can but the belts on. everything is textured now, it's just a case of improving things.
i know i stand no chance of winning this comp (in fact even coming in the top 50% would be good) but it's all experience and besides, it's the taking part that matters. thanks for all the help guys.
c&c would be great!

Your quite the fast one. Here's some C&C, hope it helps.

>check the stretching on the cheeks of the bulldog. Also try to cover that seam within the texture or vertex coloring.

>Try desaturating your colors a bit, that red almost hurts the eye.

>Same goes for those white pants. They need creases, and most of all they need dirt to make 'em come alive

> Add some shadows around the little details on his chest. Like what you did for the white straps on his chest. Do the same for his buttons and the white horizontal things.

>Variate the color of the collar, add some dirt and shadow.

>Try giving the white straps on his chest some detail, they take up a lot of space and look a bit boring the way they are now.

>Also try adding a little shadow on the underside on of his head. it looks really flat. Also a bit more shadow under his armpits and under his crotch would bring more depth to the texture.

>Try to add some leathery texture to the leathery parts like the bag and straps. The more worn, the better.

You've got some time left, so try spicing it up as much as possible.

Good luck!

thanks for the crit supervileg, i'll try and sort all the things out mentioned. at the mo, i'm having my first go at rigging so i'll try and get round to finishing off the texture in a few days time.
thanks again.
anyone got anything else to add?

funkyrayuk
08-27-2004, 04:23 PM
i've been trying to refine him a bit more now improving all the areas mentioned, rigged him aswell and done the beauty shot.
Can anyone tell me what the correct way is to have applied the texturing cos i was getting problems when it came round to having to move the rifle?
is it ok to have all the accessories attached together, then to do a texture map for them and then to detach them from each other so they can be moved around independently?

here's the beauty shot, c&c?
