An extreme Jeep CJ7 which is in the later stages of post compositing. It will be composited into some build up/construction footage(live) and later will be animated into some extreme action sequences. There will be three parts to the entire series. More still shots are to come as the release date to the first sequence approaches.

great work. just add some more reflections to the panels of the jeep.. they seem a little too matte.

Thanks for the Feedback guys, Glad you all like it.

In 24 hours I should have some more shots of various close ups and other angles, as well as some from inside the Jeep.

phildog......Im still tweaking some of the Spec and Reflect maps, as Im compositing it into live action. Im kind of limited in my variations as the ref is quite mat/flat looking. Still thanks for the comments.

amazing~ excellent compositing~
I think you excute texture, shadow, and lighting really well.
I like the detail on the car so much~
I have some suggestion as well ~
Isn't the wall and trophy in the background kinda loosing too much detail?
It looks like everything is flat out there, and the wall and trophy are too bright for the indoor lighting (the garage door is also closed).
Some strench and distortion on those trophy and other stuff couldn't compare to the excellent quality that you putting on the car....
That is only my opinion. :)
but hey~ this is an EXCELLENT piece~ superb~

Wow Guys.....Thanks my jaw dropped when I saw the CG Talk front page. All I can say is thanks for all the great positive feedback and thanks to CG Talk for front page!

tomaa, OGI and Skulleader.....the song in the vid is "Pedal to the Metal" by Kazzer.

Gremlin....yes I used the tutorials from HDR Shop, and the HDR Shop program to compile the images into an HDRI. Full credit goes to HDR shop for their information and program used to create the HDRI(keep in mind it does take a bit of tweaking and camera adjustment to get a useable HDRI). In regards to the HDRI I can only take credit for the raw footage and setup.

DUCKORABB...thanks. You must have liked the Sammy in the vid then...btw that guy just put a 50 shot of NOS on that lil Sammy.

ty19345....great feedback and I totally agree. All is greatly appreciated. The indoor shots have been tricky cause Im trying not to stray to far away from the Video footage. The outdoor shots will be much better quality.

LOL @ SimonGibson.....crazy, well I guess you havent talked to my wife lately.

Ranc0r...as Ive said before, a comment of it looking photo real is exactly what I was shooting for....Thank you.

Supervlieg....there will be actually 3 Stages(shorts) of OHVXtreme:

"The Build Up"(live action of the CG jeep being built)

"On the Street"(Live action of the beast wreaking havok on the small town of Red Deer)

"Off-Road Extreme"(Live action of extreme action where you find out if the jeep lives or dies)

Each will be roughly 1 min in length.

fist...again thanks for the great feedback. Actually Stage 01 is about 40 hours away from completion,
depending on time and other commitments it should be viewable by the end of the month. The other 2 stages will not be far behind.

Your image broke my heart.

I remember my first 1979 CJ-7. I yanked out the 6 and dropped in a 350 from a Monte Carlo. Added a Turbo 400 tranny with a slap stick and BOOM, whadda ride. Unfortunately it only ran about half the month. When it was running, I was averaging 5-7 miles per gallonhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/eek.gif When you hit the hammer the 35" rubber would bark like a hound dog. I didn't think it would chirp in first gear!

Awesome CG work

What can I say but thank you all very much. This has definately been a bright spot in my week as the last few weeks have been pretty tough to say the least....tough to get work done, but you all have inspired me to kick it into high gear....Thank you all!

D3-2go....the biggest things Ive found with HDRI failing are:

Camera quality
Camera calibration
Finding a good light probe
Improper F-Stop settings
Line up of your matching points from 0 and 90 degrees.

I would double check all of these items and make sure you do the tuts on the HDR Shop site, and just take your time....hope this helps.

Yup SteveV.....sbc(400 stroked to 406 on a 100hp NOS kit), Turbo 350 and NP 205. Detroit lockers front and rear. Dana 60 in the front and bowtie 14 in the rear.

P_T.....use the alpha map on HDR shop site(its in the tut "Creating a Light Probe"), it works pretty good. I had to tweak mine a bit. A lil touch up here and there in photo shop did the trick.

XLNT 3d....talk about a huge compliment, thank you. It really inspires me to know that my work has touched someone on a personal level.

07-22-2004, 11:19 AM
wow, like all the others i'm totally impressed. this is a whole other side of cg that i'm using, so allow me some questions.

- how many and which passes (like: ambience, shadow, reflection, highlight...) did/do you use?
- how long did the complete rendering take? I'm told mental ray takes quite a while for hdri.
- in which resolution will the final clips be, and how long will a frame take?

in fact i don't know the answers, but i think the rendering is quite an effort. i would love to do animaion in such complex scenes, but i get nightmares, if i think about the time...

Thanks everyone!

aydinu....the HDRI is the primary with 3 fill lights to bring up a little bit of the character lights in the garage.

steverage...yes, in every way....right from the engine starting to seeing it run through mudd and other destructive obsticles.

Jo B....there was a Diffuse, highlight, reflect and shadow pass....all composited in Eyeon digital fusion....all compositing work is being done in DF. Mental Ray is pretty good you just have to tweak your settings. The renders you are seeing didnt take more than 30 min, and the production renderings are averaging 6min to 15min per frame...I have over 22ghz working on the project. It can be overwelming, just take your time and dont over think your problems.

Thanks Again everyone, all of the positive feedback is greatly appreciated.

CDS,

I used a high end SLR digital Nikon camera. I also purchased a 2" Chrome Alloy Steel Ball from McMaster-Carr. I lined up the angle from the Chrome ball at 90 degree. I may have done something wrong in the camera calibration and the F-stop.

I am not really sure what am i looking for during the camera calibration. I looked into the HDR Shop tutorial, it said "once you have a curve you like, you can stop the solver ...." when i tried to calibrate my images, i really don't have a clue what curve create the best result.

also, most of the camera F-stop are 1.8, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, and 32. i am not sure how to take picture at a 1/3 of a stop interval.

need your pointer

thanks,
D3-2go

D3-2go,

I have the a Nikon D70 Digital SLR camera.
Here's a quick example of how to use it to generate photos for HDRI through the cameras 'Bracketing' function.

Basically, this method produces 3 continuously shot images with correct exposure intervals. If you were to use f/stops alone, the depth of field would change from image to image.

I set the camera to:

AE Exposure Bracketing only.
EV 1/2 step.
BKT order to ->+ (Under>MTR>Over)
Continuous shot mode.
Matrix Metering.
Bracketing Program to 3F 2 to get 3 images of exposure -2, 0,+2.

If you require 2 additional inbetween images:
Set the program to 3F 1 to get -1, 0,+1 (and delete the duplicated 0) although 3 seems enough.

Assemble the images in HDR Shop
Setting Preset scale to 1F Stop for the 5 images or
Setting Preset scale to 2F Stop for 3 images.

also Calibrate the cameras curve from the images.

I especially like the texturing on the tire treads and sidewalls. Did you use custom UV mapping on most of it, or standard projections?

D3-2go
07-23-2004, 09:23 PM
Andy,

I have Nikon D100 (i wish this is mine) which has similar features compairing to D70. I set up my camera according to your setting.

what setting do i set on the dial? M, A, S or P? Also, not all f-stops will take 5 pictures. when i had it on 5.6, it took 6 pictures when i hold down the shutter-release button. then i didn't have to take any (according to the camera setting) i didn't have to take any pictures until i change the f-stop to 11 or 18. is there anything i am not aware?

D3-2go

AndyWhiteley
07-24-2004, 12:49 AM
D3-2go,

I don't want to go off thread too much, but I usually set the camera to M (manual) and use the settings as described previously. I have had no problem taking 3 continuous photos at a time with various initial f/stop settings, so I can't really comment.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but Ive been out shooting more footage for some of the final scenes. Thank you everyone for all the great feedback.

Jo B.....Thanks, and yes once the first stage in the series is ready, CG Talk will be one of the first places that I will submit it to.

carn1fex.....it might be the jpeg compression that is causing the jeep logo to stand out a bit more. Great observation, I really didnt notice it.

DXtreme....thank you, that was my entire intent.

shortbuss......Im looking forward to seeing your work.

jasonkey......actually everything on the jeep is UV mapped.

Hi, CDS. I'm making a racing car realistic. http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=158322
But I am not satisfied with my result.
I notice you have used mental ray as well as I did. But I just couldn't adjust well. When I try to use a photograph as the scene background, the shadow of the car is not a bit soft. especially dark! The background behind the shadow can't be seen a little. I don't know why this could happen. So finally, I had to model the scene as well. Because of not using a photograph as background, the result as you can see is not good.
Could you please tell me how to solve this problem? How to compose them well ?
I'm using maya. But I think there must be the same point. Thx!
