View Full Version : Complex Bending

Hey all,

I want to create a hose with ridges in it that follows a specified curve. I've got a straight hose as you can see in the picture.

But using the bend tool is unweildy and can create unwanted buldges.

Any idea on how to create something like this? I have tried Rail Clone with a single ridge segment, but it doesn't attach the segments and is not exact in its placement. I have tried Rail Extrude, but you lose the ridges in the hose.

I'm sure I can do this in Layout using bones, but I don't have a lot of time, and at the moment, don't need this animated.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

try spline guide?

Not familiar with it. Is it a regular part of Modeler, or is it a plugin?

Where u wont to band? In layout or in Maodeler?
In Layout u can add bone chain and bend your object as u like, bdw. u can save this object transformed...

Eugeny,

Your photo shows the effect I want to get. But I want to do it in Modeler as opposed to Layout. I know I can rig a set of bones and then save a transformed object, but I've never really done that, and I'm working frantically to finish my WIP for this month. Is there a way to do it in Modeler that will achieve the same effect? If the best looking way is to use bones, I'll go that route.

Thanks!

Ok , here some quick solution for u... (see pic)
Just few tips...
Use 6 o 8 gone to Rail extrude.
Don't use automatic settings for Rail Extrude, just do some experimental to get some "right" density of the mesh.
Keep your spline and profile to future changes...
Hope this can help u. LightWave need damn Lattice tool in both app!

Very cool! Thanks for taking the time to provide a visual step-by-step process. :wavey:

If your using regular LW splines (as opposed to beziers) get c_Bend plugin. It's awsome and will get you precisely what you want.

I just tried the SplineGuide. Whatever is it for? I can't figure out a situation where I would use such a thing. Would've been great if it acctually worked like an interactive spline deformer, instead of being stuck to a center point like that. The "Make curve" option would be a great addition for MagicBevel.

evenflcw, I've got C_Bend, but my server at work won't let me connect to the site and I can't recall how to use the plugin. Guess I'll have to wait till I get home to try it out. Have you had much success in using it?

Damn, Steve u mast try this, kick ass plug
Just select two points to get the axis of bend and after that select the rest of points. Run the script, and WOW !... U mast have some spline in BG layer.
Thanx evenflcw :buttrock:

Thanks for attaching the plugin! I'm playing with it (it just crashed Modeler) but I still can't seem to get it. Please bear with my slow learning process. I've got a poly with lots of segments in the foreground. A curve in the background. I then select points on what? The curve or the poly to be bent?

Thanks!

hi,

select to points on the mesh in orientation of the bending - then select + the rest (all) points and run the script.

U mast select some two points on your model - this get for plugin axis direction. Then (with these two points selected) select rest of the points. Now run the plug, choose the curve option and one of the options (stretch , etc.), that's all.

ahs - u can edit your posts using edit botton, dont worry about your english - mine too - not so good :)

So it would seem that this is good for simple curves, right? Using a twisting complex curve in the background would distort the model. Maybe that's why it caused Modeler to crash earlier...

BTW, you should never apologize for your english. If I tried to write in French, Polish, Hebrew, Greek, Italian, or any of the other languages I see here as people's native tongue, I'd get laughed all the way back to the United States. :P

UPDATE!
------------
Oh, Oh, Oh! Ok. I apologize for my stupidity. I got it to work. Oh, man! You guys were right! This thing rocks!!! Thanks for the help! Selecting the two points, then the rest did the trick. So cool!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

With C_Bend and all of your helpful, patient instruction I was able to get my hose to bend along the desired path.

Many, many thanks!

The person who created cBend (I think someone else did BezierBend and it does a simular thing;not sure though) should get a wavy award! It so freaking powerful. Once you've learn how it operates, it delivers predictable and perfect results. Only other way to do this I think is with bones, as Eugeny first suggested.
